    Who would get it?
    Hi guys,

I was asked a question by a affiliate I was trying to recruit today and I was not sure of the answer. He wanted to know if a customer visited his site, made an order and canceled it and then visited another affiliate's site and made the same order, who would get the sale? I thought the answer had to do with the cookie life but I'm not sure!

Would go to the affiliate who sent the buyer to place the second order.

First order is canceled and has nothing to do with the new 2nd order, a new cookie was set when the buyer went through the second affiliate site, this would overwrite the original cookie.

IMHO, if they visit a thousand sites, buy from yours, cancel and buy from anyone else, the aff with the last purchase should get the order.

That's one of my problems with cookies.

    If you get the sale.

    YOU GET THE SALE!

Shouldn't be a second thought about it.

    As I said ...

    IMHO!

BIG EDIT! If they go to YOUR site, BUY, Cancel and then go to the merchant site to buy, a cookie should kick in and .....

YOU should get the credit ......

Price of having an affiliate network .....

What's the likelihood of that happening? Probably very close to 0%, even dealing with loyalty affiliates...

Thanks. I thought the last click would get it but I started to over think it.

Now, when you say "over thinking," just exactly what do you mean by that?

And when you say "will drive you crazy," how would you define "crazy" in this context?

And when you say "you," are you using that generically for anyone or are you speaking only of the poster?

And when you say "not careful," exactly what do you mean? Can you define "careful" here?

    And when ...

Let me make sure I understand, please. Let's forget about the cancel part of this.

What if somebody finds something they want at my website, then clicks away and goes searching for a lower price. Assuming they DO NOT find that lower price, they just buy the thing from whereever they last looked for the cheaper price - maybe one of those price compare type sites. That's the site, not mine, is going to get the last cookie and the commision, right?

Are there any occasions where first cookie gets the commission?

They can't just "look" and set a cookie, they have to click on a link. And as Haiko pointed out, on Shareasale last cookie always gets credit. Also on CJ. I *think* that is how it is on LS, but I have not managed a program there so I don't know if the setting can be changed by the merchant.

Some inhouse programs can have either first cookie or last cookie and you want to check on that and really think about whether the first or last cookie should get the sale. After all, you might be first, last or middle click if someone is shopping around.

No matter how you slice it the winner is the last click period.

most vendors would actually not accept the 2nd order if the customer used the same info. Atleast the more sophisticated vendors.

It depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is...

That's a topic being covered in another thread, and if a merchant doesn't pay on multiple sales from the same customer that needs to be indicated in their Terms of Service. At CJ it is in the program terms under "Number of Occurances" and is usually "one" or "unlimited".

Any purchases made during an affiliates cookie duration need to be credited unless it is explicitly specified in the merchant TOS that it is limited to once. The more "sophisticated" vendors would be breaking their own TOS.

Actually Lox, I have developed the ability to set cookies by telepathy. I just set one for your site just now by thinking hard.

Broken record...last cookie wins. Cancelled order or no cancelled order.

I'm assuming we are discussing ethical affiliates here... And even toolbars require a click, even if it isn't on the website. Cookie stuffing is a whole other can of worms and isn't allowed in most programs....
