Tell you what, does Chicago want 2012? I certainly don't want it anywhere near me (i.e. London)!

Fine by me. We don't need to spend more money on this type of thing.

If done right, it can not only make your city the focal point of world interest for several months, provide an aura of excitement, be a vehicle for needed civic improvements, but also make a profit. See the Los Angeles 1984 experience. I was very skeptical beforehand, but was totally amazed at the end result.

Agreed. I think history shows that all US cities have turned a profit after the games. BUT, recent mindset is that pumping money into something will get the desired result - success. I disagree with this viewpoint and would be afraid that we would do this with Chicago.

I think they already spent tens of millions to get to the final stages. It was an investment to get that far...not to mention the President lobbying for it. It ain't cheap to have the President to show up at an event.

And like any other world event, it will inject hundred of millions into the local economy from creation of jobs to new infrastructure. i.e. the Beijing Olympics brought many things to the city from the Bird's nest to cleaning up the environment.

Why did China want it: to prove they were an economic force - a fact anyone who paid attention to the global climate already knew.

While I agree the Olympics *could* be a big money maker - I think that is all we see in it anymore. We have lost the spirit of the games and a Chicago olympics would just be a way to commercialize the sport and one-up China - which would mean spending over 50 Billion dollars and this is not where we need 50 billion dollars going, IMHO

I had a feeling Rio would get it. I'm very glad for them.
