"Second question. Nothing major happening in next month or so that you don't already know about unless Google getting a new look next month is major. I think not."

Just to clarify my prediction, i meant next month before everybody sees it. It starts this month. Next time i'll be more clear

The directory has all but vanished too.

The odd thing is the prominence they've given to Google Groups - I know *I* use it but nobody else I know does.

Yeah, there are all kinds of examples like that in any SE. There's always gonna be SPAM in every SE and you will always be able to find examples of searches that don't bring in the most relevant results in any SE. You can get top listings for phrases that you don't even have on your site just because someone linked to your site with that phrase.

Did Google always make the keyword search for bold if it was in the url of the site listed?

Google might be having a go at a multi-layer SE crap filter with just the first layer in place. They may be tracking click through ratios of the free listing keyword combos to see where the top results get a big yawn from SE spam savvy searchers.

Next filter layer goes in place based upon click through ratio of top listings that get poor CTR after analyizing for common keyword ranking spam techniques. They then compare the CTR after applying 2 filters seeing if relevency improves on the top positions given by their bot.

Third filter requires careful human Google intervention to see which domains, doorway pages and SEO/SEM spam techniques get past the other 2 filters. Filter Gauge is the CTR of their top listings on top 100,000 keyword search combos.

LOL ...if this all proves to be a futile effort in SE spam filtering , Google and the others could just filter out all listings containing the words coupon -free (except free freight)-freebee and force those with an advertising mindset to put their incent promo's on their own pages earning them a bookmark or forcing them to PPCSE fees.
