I have no idea how often. Never really paid attention, just dealt with the crashes.

    Interesting question though.

If you mean 'power reset time' - my pc's average between 8 and 10 months

If you mean 'power reset but need to rebuild file structure ...' - every couple of years.

If you mean 'power reset time' on our Mac --- about every 2 to 3 months

My PC I have now hasn't crashed either. Must be a Mac issue.

Has only happened to me once. When I downloaded and installed a Panda trial my PC got crippled. Fortunately was able to recover, with a little help from a friend.

This is a B.S. survey -- clearly an Apple/Mac fan. The survey question assumes that any computer (other than a Mac) will always crash at least once a month, and thus excludes answers like 'every 3 months' or 'once a year.' And what if a Mac user experiences crashes every week -- which option should she select?

You also haven't defined what you mean by the word "crash."

If the definition is, "a single software app ceases to work properly, requiring closing the program and re-launching it," then probably once every 2 weeks (usually involving either Microsoft Word, Quicken, or Eudora).

If the definition is, "the computer stops working, requiring a restart," then it's down to about once every 2 to 3 months (average over the past 2-3 years).

If the definition is, "the computer ceases working properly, requiring more work than just a restart (reconfigure OS, reinstall OS, replace hardware), then the answer is about once every 10 months, average over the past 5 years.

I use Windows XP on a Dell computer which I bought 3 years ago last month (as noted in this ABW discussion thread). During that time, I've had to re-format and re-install Windows on two separate occasions, and I also had a hard disk failure which required that I re-install Windows a third time.)

If you're asking about "system startup time," there are two options, counting from a "cold boot" (powering up the computer after properly shutting it down):
    - From the time I press the "on" button until I see the Windows desktop is probably 30 to 40 seconds.
    - The McAfee (virus/security software) startup process adds another 30 to 40 seconds before I can actually do useful work (access the internet).

You aren't going to get meaningful or useful results from a survey that uses such vague and clearly biased wording.

The Mac advertising folks really need to come up with another angle soon, even moreso with Windows 7 coming out which is getting lots of good reviews. Their commercials are basically the same thing, PC you get viruses, crashes etc. Not saying it doesn't happen but less and less. And Macs crash as well. Even saw one Mac commercial talking about the blue screen of death. I had that with Windows 98 sometimes (due to all the crap I had on it) never with XP or Vista. And my Vista PC computer has never crashed on me. And the recent PC commercials with regular people buying PC computers because the Apples are usually priced too high, are doing very well. Apple needs to step their advertising game up, starting to get stale and inaccurate.

    Only twice a week?

How about during the last few months it crashes every time I use Firefox to search Google?
    I have an XP.

Firefox became my default browser a few years ago.
I have tried others but I always go back to Firefox.

I read somewhere that the crashes might be related to my "Free AVG" -- I've upgraded FF & I've upgrade AVG but I am still miserable

I don't think this poll will reveal anything amazing.

1 Vista Desktop - Never crashed in three years that I can remember.
1 XP Desktop and 1 XP for Tablets - Can't remember a full crash, had to reboot occasionally due to an unstable application, probably once every couple of months for the desktop and a little more frequently for the tablet.

Had a Mac once many years ago, it crashed daily. I was the one parked outside the local Apple office asking them how they wanted their system back. They could come and get it, or just wait for it to sail through their window. They came and got it.

Your poll is biased and sucks!

None of the questions fit me. My computer never has a crash - not for the last three years.

I have a HP computer with Vista. Get rid of the Mac and you won't have to worry about a crash.

Nothing wrong with loving your Mac, but be realistic and fair here in your poll.

Having worked as a network administrator in a Mac lab and with PCs daily at my j*b and at home, I can honestly say I've had a lot fewer problems with the PCs.

I just read an article today that said something like 12% of households with computers have a Mac. Of those households, 85% of them also have a PC. LOL.

Oh, and I couldn't answer the poll because you didn't list "once every two years".

The one crash I mentioned was PC. Wasn't thinking back that far when I made that post, but when I was on a Mac the crashes were so frequent that I got into the habit of saving my work every 5 or 10 minutes as I went along.

Frankly, my Mac has more problems than my 5 year old Windows XP desktop, or even my XP vitual machine on my Mac. Occasionally programs will "crash" on the Mac, refuse to relaunch, and think that they're already open - I can't even kill the processes from the command line using sudo and kill. Certain flash sites love to crash/long-hang Safari. I love the Mac commercials that talk about always having to upgrade Windows - I get just as many OS upgrades/program patch popups occuring on the Mac as the PC.

My only real XP issue was a bad bios issue that was blue-screening my computer, but once I updated the Intel driver (a Dell specific bug), the BSODs went away.

Never. Hodge Podge homemade XP machine.

I reboot if Firefox seems to be screwing up memory allocation but no big deal and is my preference. O ya it reboots in about 50 seconds.

I have an old PC laptop that crashes nearly everytime I get on the internet. The new PC rarely crashes.

Skewed poll for sure. I use both a Mac and a Compaq PC running XP. I seldom get a "crash" where I have to reboot either one. I do use the Mac a lot more than the PC but that is a matter of choice and convenience for traveling.

XP never. Vista about once every two weeks.

I had an update on Vista about a month ago that caused it to blue screen over and over but it was an easy fix.

As others have said, Firefox keeps crashing as much as 2-3 times a day. It's always a good excuse for a bathroom break so it's not much worry.

Goes to show what a good marketing campaign can accomplish. If you ask the typical consumer which system is most reliable, I can guarantee that the consensus would say Mac, even if they have no experience with a Mac. From my experience and what's being posted here, that couldn't be further from the truth. I suppose they need to find some way to justify being 3 to 4 times the cost of a PC, but perhaps reliability isn't the right angle.

I've never had a full on computer crash whether it be XP or Vista. I know its just a matter of time though.

My fiance has a Mac that is about 4 years old and crashes about every 4-5 months. I hate that computer with a passion.
