I can't wait. I don't think they have tested this live.

Out of my 20,000 or so current email users, about 8,000 have filled their 25mb box for a simple reason, they subscribe to porn or groups from yahoo or msn. Unabated, those will quickly reach 100gb.

Everyone has an email address, pretty damn hard to get on the net wihtout one being given to you, but people don't use those to avoid junk. GOogle will find, regular users just use free email services to make threats and collect junk, the return is very low. I can only imagine they will put adsense ads in the system, further diluting their worth.

And I guess the emails will be delivered by Google's pigeons, eh?

Yeah, I especially like the de-oxygenated cubicle dwelling we're given to test out if hired.

Maybe this one isn't an April Fools day joke. Usually they only devote a single page to any joke.

Realisticly, the revenue basis is simple - they can display millions more Adsense skyscrapers with ads. And they can do a quick search of keywords in each message displayed (yes, this means they would be "reading" your mail) and display appropriate ads, using Adsense.
(from the Gmail privacy policy: "We serve highly relevant ads and other information as part of the service using our unique content-targeting technology. No human reads your email to target ads or related information to you without your consent." )

So a gig of storage is now way under a buck, and annual maintenance on that gig is under 25 cents or so. All they need to do is generate 10 or 15 click-throughs per account and they have paid the investment and first year's maintance, plus of course some more for the bandwidth.

The big question is, with a whole Gigabyte of storage for your email, how long will it take to overflow with spam? Word is that Las Vegas bookies place even money on 2 weeks.

You'd be plain daft to announce it on April fools day, especially with the 1Gb of data claim. GooleGuy was over at WMW and was being very tight lipped.

I think there's a grain of truth in it though...

Not sure where you are getting that .25/gig price. Considering the support nightmare google is walking into, the overall cost is much higher.

I wonder if they have ramped up their support team (never a stellar part of google) for this rollout. Providing users with search results vs providing people with rock solid email and support is very different.

Just seems strange that they tout the biggest thing about it is the ability to search and store the emails, most users i see care more about getting the relevant mail and blocking the spam.

I think this is a hoax, but if it's real ...

What they are doing is scanning the incoming messages and when you click on an email the adsense will show up about the topic of the email. For example, if a friend mentions going to a concert, the adsense ads will show for concert tickets.

Pretty neat if people will actually read the emails, but I'm not sure how many people will use it for actual email as opposed to just using it for spam.

Also, I'm not sure how google will get the average every day person who doesn't have an email yet to use it. Maybe that's why the 1 gb, but I can't see that being a huge plus to the average user. My parents aren't computer savvy but they do have Yahoo accounts. I can't imagine them switching. I bet there are a lot of other users like them out there.

Apparently it's real, but it just sounds too spooky for me to use. I don't want bots scanning my email for content.

Well, looks like our doubts have spurred a response:
