I recently ran a sweepstakes, and now I've got to select the winners.

Does anybody have ideas for a method to randomly select the winners?

Shawn: We do this all the time. Depending on how many entries you have, simply enter some sort of id #. For affiliates - use their id. For entries on a web form use either names or the date and time of the entry. Our web forms asign a numeric number in sequence, so it's real easy. First id would be 20040001 - 20043078 or something like that. If you have thousands like we do you can put numbers 1-31 in a jar. Each number represents a calander date. Select a #. Now you have the entry date of the winner. Now enter all entries on that date in a jar (a hat works too) lol - now pick your winner! There was a script I use to use and we just entered entry id's and it randomly selected for us. The calander date and jar method makes it much more exciting! It all comes down to how many entries. Just an idea...

I always use random.org. Can't get a more random drawing than this.

You do need to have a number assigned to all the entries whether it's in your database, you have them in an Excel sheet or written down on a piece of paper. Key in how many random numbers you want returned to you in the first field, and set the largest value field to the number of entrants you had. I always have it give me back at least twice as many results as I need in case there are ones that are disqualified for some reason.

I used to split the entrants into groups and assign each a colour, I'd give my dog a biscuit of each of those colours, the one she chose first would be the group. I'd then ask my son to pick a number from 1 to whatever in that group.

I also used grapes once depending on which one I could catch in my mouth by throwing it in the air, the dogs choice of chocolate drop validated the random selection prodedure.

Get all the applicants to include their picture and then pic the one with the best picture.

Or throw a dart to to the screen, and see where it sticks. If it doesn't stick anywhere, you win!
