if you have a domain name that covers a particular niche, try products that match that niche.

You will hear this time and time and time again. You might even find it in previous searches.

Sell what you know and love. You will sell and promote this better than anything out there. I am sure there are longer and better explanations. But that is what it comes down to.

some products/services are seasonal, some are staples that can be marketed over a long term, some are hot for a short period of time based on stuff happening in the world.

You need to first take time and decide on your niche, once that is done, everything else is easy. Once the niche has been decided, then all you ned to do is do some amount of research to select the best products in that particular niche.

    Cheers

In addition to what others have said (which I agree with)--you can also get some analysis on how well a product is selling.

I use this source because he does unbiased reviews, which he bases on a combo of gravity, refund rates etc: (edited to remove link)

    hope that helps!

Are the rules here really THAT rigid?

No offense, but I'm not affiliated with that site and use it regularly for my own clickbank product research. I was trying to be helpful.

Can someone suggest another way I could've pointed the OP towards useful research without stepping on toes here?

    sheesh!

That's transitory, with little likelihood of long-term success, unless you can keep a steady stream of "hot" products going. That trial and error stuff is more helpful to find something to build a foundation upon, one that can be more self-sufficient and not require constant research and updating.

To make money online you must have at least 20 products to promote.

What?? Did you just pull that number out of the air? Are you sure it's 20 -- not 19, not 18, not 21?

So if you can only come up with 19, you're out of luck?

Who would have thought MORE than 20 would be a problem? But, there it is: I have 21, and can't make a go of it.

Sometimes it's not about promoting "a product". It can be finding the right merchant to promote and then creating multi-product sites.

Either way, a good starting point, IMO, is market research. Something as basic as the Google keyword tool to see if people are even looking for this product. Get creative and check related searches too - maybe they are searching for a solution to a problem that one of your promoted product provides. For example, your product can be odor removal, so you should also be checking for "how to get rid of cat pee smell" searches.

And then, as was mentioned here, trial and error. Don't be too quick to point fingers at merchants though, if you can't convert them. Some products work for some affiliates and not others (different kinds of traffic, different ways of selling).
