    DMOZ =

I still get some decent traffic from them, but it has been static or declining for years!

I know but it's still a link in and still an authority type directory. So I figured I would give it a shot for this niche site I've been working on. Category didn't have an editor, seems like most don't, so we'll see.

There's definitely still activity going on, but IMO it never recovered from the massive outage it had back in 2006.

Whether they are on the up and coming list or has beens.....

Doesn't make any sense to turn your back on them..

Hell, I'd promote my sites on bathroom walls if I thought I would get a few hits.

To be clear, I was never a fan of them because years ago, I was checking them out, categories my sites would go in and a lot of them never had editors it seemed like and I found sites that didn't exist anymore or really crappy sites, tripod sites etc. I always thought it was pretty mismanaged. But they had some authority, not sure how much today, haven't kept up on it. And like I said, it's a link in so it's a worth a shot. I submitted my site for inclusion and also an application for an editor. Don't know what the best directories are nowadays, I don't think anybody really uses them so I guess it would be more for some links.

I was an editor for prolly 2 years for home improvement / remodeling / refinishing and it was a pain in the butt.

But that's when they were getting rolling.

Don't know if I am even listed anymore -

I just applied to be an editor. I submitted the request and received an email that asked me to reply to the email to confirm the email was good. I replied and got back this....

Your e-mail is being returned to you because there was a problem with its
delivery. The address which was undeliverable is listed in the section
labeled: "----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----".

So the email is returned, which is funny.

I tried to become an editor for some "non moderated" category a few month ago. They declined my application within only a few days
    (nothing changed)

Dead links are removed automatically (maybe not *instantly*) by a variety of tools. So, if the page 404s or is not accessible it will get pulled by automated bots.. one problem is that once a link is removed, it is put back into the queue and needs to be looked at by an editor again.. bad news if you've had a site outage.

The problem isn't removing link rot, it's adding fresh new links. DMOZ does desperately need new editors.. but the problem is that it needs editors who don't have a personal agenda (e.g. promoting their own site). That's always been a serious problem.. you'll note that Wikipedia (a broadly similar enterprise) allows *anyone* to edit, but then has to manage the consequences!

Dynamoo... I've asked to be an editor in the field of my expertise, tarps, in my region, Indiana or Owen County, I have even applied saying, "Hey, try me out in the directory of your choice, no matter how small and see how I do."

I even sent them notices of invalid links for specific niche directories for a while.

All attempts I made ended up summarily denied, so they can't be hurting too badly for editors, I could not possibly have been more flexible or amenable to their wishes.
Following everyone else is a GREAT way to become average.

Well.. I think it's a useful attempt to try and sort millions of web sites out by category, and the data does get used by a lot of downstream providers, sometimes in ways that are not immediately obvious.

Nobody really uses directories much these days - search engines are always getting better at delivering relevant results (including local search functions), and destinations like Wikipedia give a good overview of a subject area.

Ummm... of course you do realise that DMOZ never lists pure affiliate sites anyway!

    I didn't know that.

Anyway, I think there is one category that has increased listing quite a bit in DMOZ.

That is the blog category otherwise known as weblogs. If you have one and is useful, perhaps try that category. Another one, is to submit at the local level.

Well actually they did at one time, until they figured out the editors were the ones listing their own affiliate sites... lol, then they booted the editors and deleted their sites. You should see all of the comments in the editor's notes about us unsavory bunch.. lol.

    no aff sites in DMOZ??

Luckycoupon, Guzzus, RMN, Redplum. and more pure affiliate sites. Age of sites: 1 to 3 years.

    http://www. dmoz.org/Home/Homemaking/Frugality/Coupons/

Plenty of aff sites in other cats as well.

My 1st website, the first (& only) site I got into DMOZ is still old, still crappy, still full of affiliate links, and still listed in DMOZ.

Yeah I've got a listing in there for an internal page on a site that is the epitome of "thin affiliate". Luck of the draw, I guess. I think DMOZ sent me a clickthrough once, back around 2002 or so.

Perhaps it's your definition of directories, but mine do pretty good.
