Charity Poker Tournament during Affiliate Summit West 2010
As you may know, Shawn and I select a charity to sponsor during each of the Affiliate Summit conferences. For the upcoming Affiliate Summit West 2010, we are proud to once again, raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

While both Shawn and I are really not gamblers, we’ve heard that a quite a few number of our attendees enjoy playing Poker while they’re in Vegas. We figured that we might be able to facilitate their desire to play, mix it in with some networking and support a good charity at the same time.

Therefore, we are are proud to announce that the Charity Poker Tournament to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation will take place during Affiliate Summit West 2010.

    When: Saturday, January 16, 2010 • 9pm
    Where: Rio Hotel Las Vegas
Buy-in: $150 Payable at the Event Only ($110 goes directly to NBCF / $40 goes to Rio for Expenses to host the tournament. $100 Rebuys during the first hour also goes directly to NBCF).
Winners: Prizes, Trophies and Bragging Rights!

Detailed information on prizes and how to register for the event can be found here.

    Hope to see you there!

Ooooh, looks like fun! And for a great cause! (Is the $110 considered a charitable donation?)

Are you still accepting more prizes, or is the prize pool finalized?

Yes - the $110 is a charitable donation to NBCF. I'm kind of excited to play. I played in my first charity tournament during Blog World and I actually won a few hands (although I didn't know it until the dealer pushed the chips my way). I have Brian Littleton to thank for teaching me how to play poker earlier that day.

Unfortunately, the prize list is finalized. The Nevada Gaming Commission requires all of the prizes and to whom they will be awarded to be submitted ahead of time. A few people have asked about this as well, so I sent a message to see if some sort of addendum could be added, but I don't anticipate hearing anything back in a quick fashion. They've kind of been a little slow to move on this.

Wow! Another outstanding idea you have come up with - a fun way to raise funds for a great cause. You know I want to support this - but neither Jill nor I are big poker players...so...

Instead of one of us sitting at a table, GirlyChecks.com would like to contribute the equivalent of a Buy-in, $150. This can be used as a $50 donation with a $100 Casino Chip as a Prize or vice-versa, your choice. If the prize spots are all spoken for then consider the $150 a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Just let us know when/where to send it.

Not everyone plays poker but everyone can help. It would be good to see other non-players ante-up , in some way, for this worthwhile endeavor.

Not a problem - I just thought some others might want to get in on the prize. If it's not an option, it's good to know.

    Hey Bill,

    I <3 U!!!!

They won't let me add a single prize or even randomly give an "unplanned" one away at the tournament. So here are my suggestions if you would like to make a donation to NBCF during the tournament

    1) Come on down and get a $150 poker lesson (like I got during the charity tournament I played in during blogworld) ;-)
    2) Feel free to sponsor someone with your buy-in if you like. This way, you're helping out a great charity and maybe someone who wants to play that might not necessarily be able to afford the buy-in.

If you'd like, you can always make a donation to the NBCF online here: https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/donate/ and just note "Missy Ward-Affiliate Summit" in the "in honor of someone" section so that it can be applied towards the total money we raise during Affiliate Summit West 2010.

Thanks again for your continued support!

Hey Bill, I'm looking for a sponsor $150 is out of my price range, even for so worthy a cause, so I was going to ask if I'd be allowed to get sponsored by one or more people. I wasn't sure if it was against the rules or something.

Daniel, I'll sponsor you if Bill made other plans already!.
So, let me know if I should go ahead and register in my name for the event, but instead of me playing there, you'll do it? I am assuming this is how the buy-in sponsorship works.

    Wow - that's awesome.

The payment for the buy in is payable at the event. We're using the eventbrite registration process just to get a rough head count of how many folks are attending. So I guess, it really doesn't matter who registers in this instance as long as someone is there to do the donation for the buy in

    Sounds good.

I just put in my name there (even though I will be the last person to play there)

This is a buy in for "Daniel" if he wants it. Or it will go to somebody.

Worse case, I will sit in and win the LAST prize, I guess

I changed the attendee name to your name in Even Brite. So, your name is listed in the attendee list. I will be there to pay and sponsor you for the event.

Good luck with practicing and winning!.

I signed up! I'm not positive that I can attend yet, but if I can't I plan on sponsoring someone and/or giving a donation in the same amount to the NBCF.

Uh, oh. I just noticed that Angel is signed up. He destroyed me at the last tournament.

OK, folks, I sign off for a while and y'all have things covered. WTG. Our industry certainly has a lot of concerned, compassionate and generous people. I'm proud to be a part of this business.

RedTagDeals, thanks for picking up Daniel's Buy-in. You, too, are generous. I would have been glad to - but missed the whole conversation. Sooo...I think Jill and I will check with our affiliates to see if someone in that group would like to play but might need help with the Buy-in.

As I mentioned earlier, "Not everyone plays poker but everyone can help out. It would be good to see other non-players 'ante-up' for this worthwhile endeavor."

I would have loved to be part of prizes too. Perhaps next time on a similar fund raising event from Aff. Summit. May be I missed reading one or two newsletters from Shawn and I missed the opportunity to sponsor some prizes.

I agree. I was in the same dilemma when I came to know of the poker event. It is for a great cause. But I could not present myself at the Poker table and fool around!. So, I am glad to sponsor someone who has shown interest and associate myself with this great event.

Update: Hey Mike - I just received clarification on this and according to the tax laws, it is not considered a charitable donation because you are receiving something in exchange -- which is the opportunity to play and possibly win prizes.
