    Historical Triggers: some Questions
What was the Trigger Event that started the fairly recent phenomena of carrying one's individual bottled water everywhere and slurping it in public like they were in the middle of the Gobi desert? I remember drinking fountains.

What was the Trigger Event that started the phenomena of kids (from highschoolers down to grade schoolers) carrying huge backpacks - full of ????
I remember Study Halls and carrying home one or two books with the assignment sheets stuck in the books; the rest I left in my locker.

When did school become a 9:00 til 2:00 job - I attended an 8:00 to 4:00 school with any 'extracurricular activities' - sports or music - held after that

    1. It is as simple as marketing.

Ad agencies representing the bottle water industry engineered a campaign that convinced the public that tap water is poison.

    2. School administrators - who embody the essence of the Peter Principal (individuals in a hierarchy tend to rise to the level of their incompetence) determined because the vile, evil, criminal students they oversee use their lockers not for books, but to store drugs and weapons, lockers have been eliminated in virtually all school districts, thus requiring students to carry all of their books back and forth on a daily basis.

    3. Budget cuts have eliminated some or most extracurricular activities in many districts.

OK - I'll agree with you Mr. Super Dawg - but -

1: Did the 'I must be better hydrated' belief also come with this marketing?

3: What explains the core daily school hours (which include remaining extracurricular activities) being reduced from 7 hours to 4?

I won't touch a drinking fountain. I can just picture some snot nose kid wrapping his/her lips around the nozzle. No thanks.

In large part, though there do appear to be real health benefits from drinking a certain amount of water (and increasing problems with drinking too much) but the real focus was on shifting consumption from nearly free tap water to expensive bottled water.

I don't think that is a national phenomenon, but it is also tied to financial considerations - less hours, lower overhead including fewer teachers = keeping overall costs down.

School hasn't been shortened by that much here - My daughter gets picked up at 6:30 am and arrives home about 2:30 pm every day. They also still have lockers but I know my kids never used them because the lockers are too far away from most of their classes so they prefer to carry most of the stuff with them all day.
