    Google to Leave China?
Google is considering pulling out of China upon the discovery that a December cyper attack that originated in China targeted the GMail accounts of human rights activists.

Any bets on whether Google actually puts the dollars aside and pulls out? I'm betting not... But the "considering" part gives them some "good guy" play.

On the official Google blog they also said
We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all.
    .

They should have done it long ago, but I guess the money were making was more important.

It's hard to tell Google to leave China, when we purchase so much stuff from there. Every other merchant is importing products from China. I think it is either we all do it or we don't bother. And frankly, there's too many people depending on making money off of their stuff. Sucks for the human rights over there, but I don't see it changing.

As per what I have read, they have just threatened to leave China. I doubt that they would leave, may be its just a threat.

What I heard on NPR is that the Chinese government is filtering Gmail and censoring. They said Google is considering cutting out the Chinese language search and email.

China is now the largest car market and only 10% of the population owns a car. They are on their way to become the biggest consumer market. If Google pulls out then its prime for others.

"Google Shuts China Site in Dispute Over Censorship

Just over two months after threatening to leave China because of censorship and intrusions by Chinese hackers, Google said Monday that it is closing its China-based Internet search service and instead directing Chinese users to a Hong Kong-based uncensored version of its search engine, which may get blocked in mainland China."

Google has indeed moved its China search service to Hong Kong which is is a special administrative region of China and enjoys more freedom, including an uncensored Internet, than mainland China.
But it will continue other operations on the mainland, including research and development work.

Will be interesting to see where this goes. If China decides to play hardball and ban Google in Hong Kong will Google move it to Taiwan?

Not knowing the landscape do the other top search engines have presence in China i.e. Yahoo, MSN/Bing?

Does it mean that actually Google has suffered nothing but transfered its search service? It won't leave China behind. It protests in other way and hopes to avoid the dispute. But will the Chinese government let it go? Wait and see.

But some of my Chinese friends say many websites outside China have banned Chinese IPs without giving reasons.

I don't think Google is leaving for good. This could be a temporary measure.
