Cash - in the form of long green, or increased commissions.

I'd say cash is probably best...however it's amazing what people will do for a free t-shirt nowadays .

Cash may be the most picked answer, but products always are appreciated and go over very well too Commission increases are close to the top of the list also.

    Cash will be quickly used

However, a good product might bring back memories for years, and if those memories include the name of the merchant, then that must be good for them.

Motivate to do what? Do more to promote a merchant? Strong conversion and timely payment are the most important motivator. Without that, a contest prize isn't worth batting an eyelash about.

My favorite are the contests you find out about a month or two after they ended! I recently won a retro-active commission bump from a GAN merchant, which I'll gladly accept, but it was a complete waste of money for them. I had no idea there was a contest going on so there was no "extra" effort on my part to promote that merchant.

So perhaps more importantly than the prize itself might be to make sure your affiliates know about it and if possible, give them status updates throughout.

Of course I'm going to go about my business 99% independently of what contest is running. If I happen to win, great. If not, hopefully I made some money elsewhere.

Cash is king, but a well chosen product can be good as well. Amazon.com gift certificates are as good as cash to most.

Another reason products work is so the affiliate can see the quality of the product and be more motivated to sell it. Better pre-sell = better affiliate conversions.

Yes, cash is better. but gift is also quite effective promotional tool as people love to get gifts.
