I had a site of mine featured on Slashdot recently. It was like an entire month's traffic being dropped on me in just 24 hours.. and sadly, it being a content site I probably *lost* money because of bandwidth and other bills. Never mind, eh?

In case you've ever wondered what it's like to be on the receiving end of the Slashdot effect, I've written it up here.

Yes indeed. And an interesting story too that caused this Slashdot effect.

Sadly, we had a site once that had over 800,000 unique visitors a day. It was a humorous flash content site and never made any real money. Humorous viral content is a hoot, but didn't pay the bills.

    800,000 uniques! Eeek!

Content sites really are not money makers in themselves.. this is something I learned from Leader and it's largely correct for the majority of webmasters. However, they're a useful thing to have in your portfolio for reasons of traffic passing and search engine optimisation. And heck, they can be a lot of fun too.

What's the route to take to get Slashdotted for some of my merchants clients? The have some unique content pages and one baffles the Shops.org group with their record setting conversion ratio for 5 years straight.

They way to get to the Slashdot crowd would be.. ooh I dunno, underwear with integrated Linux or something

Unfortunately, they really aren't interested in buying. They seem to suck up the information and then leave.

slashdots audience is useless in term of general affiliate marketing, unless you are selling penguin mints or server hardware (thats a joke).

Don't think collectibles or whatever other junk someone is selling is going to work that well for that audience.
