    Never Assume
After his request was approved, the CNN News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight.

He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport.

Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger.

He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go'.

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off.

Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.'

    'Why?' asked the pilot.

'Because I'm a photographer for CNN' , he responded, 'and I need to get some close up shots.'

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me, is . . . You're NOT my flight instructor?'

    Heh heh.

Luckily, since it's twin engines, the guy will already have his private pilot's licence for a single, so it's not as bad as it seems.

Well, that was a good place to land - after, all he is a "traffic" reporter.

Seriously, that happens a few time a year. The pilot just has to keep his head together and hope that the drivers on the highway are paying attention.

Probably so, but not necessarily so. Some people (with $$$) take their initial flight training in a twin. I actually had a bit of twin (dual instruction) time before I had passed my Private Pilot checkride. Not that I could afford it (poor college student at the time), but because I hung around the airport a lot and was given some "free" flights in exchange for helping out on occasion.

Here's a report and picture of a plane, just like mine, that landed in a field in New York State last November. The plane flipped over but the pilot walked away. http://www.thekathrynreport.com/2009...sh-landed.html (scroll down a bit to see the article - the twin engine plane at the top is NOT like mine.

Y'know - they say a "good landing" is one you can walk away from; and a great landing is when you are able to use the airplane again.
