    $10 Just for Signing Up?!?!?
Well this was a classic that I just saw from a company sort of similar to us (ok, a competitor who shall remain nameless).

The owner of the company who also manages the affiliate department (and shipping, customer service, and pretty much everything else) posts all over the place:

EDIT: "We'll pay you $10.00 just for signing up!"

This was in forum where numerous people asked questions and the person had every opportunity to clarify and did not. It is an in-house program, not on a network, so "pay" and "deposit" are not the same term really.

And then once you dig a LOT further, he requires a minimum balance of $20.00 to get paid.

Nice sales job but isn't the more ethical way to word this:

"$10.00 bonus on your first sale"?

    Just sayin'

    Dumb.

I think it's fine. Same with the - We'll give you $10 in your account for putting up links, email them the page you have the links up etc. Just different ways trying to get affiliates active.

I think it depends on the wording. I wish like crazy I had the original wording because even I was surprised. Looking...

Edited with the correct text and my comments in blue.

Maybe I am being hard on this person, but I think it's shady especially considering the audience is not people who are overly familiar with affiliate marketing who might know what he "means," presuming his intent is honorable and not shady.

"We'll pay you $10.00 just for signing up!"

That implies that you will get paid $10, yet you have to have $20 to actually get paid. They mean that they will deposit $10 just for joining. Very different meaning.

    Misleading wording

My first response was to the pre-edit which I thought was fine and was something like we'll put $10 into your account for signing up, which I think is fine.

Different from we'll pay you $10 just for signing up.

Sorry Trust...didn't mean to make you look bad

Your response made me realize how much I needed to copy/paste his statement.

Anywho, not trying to make anyone look bad. It doesn't matter if he is a competitor or not. Just think that if someone is going to make an offer like this, it should be worded correctly, like Andy Rodriguez or any other good AMs do!

No problem but yeah, the way they have it is misleading, no question.

Whatever you will write, some of your affiliates will complain. Even correct wording will not help you.

e.g. we used wording "signup bonus $50" and clearly stated, that minimum payout is $100 and min 2 sales, but some affiliates complained, that they were not payed (even if they referred no sale).

They need to be more specific about their program for sure ....

But I think that paying $10.00 for $20.00 of sales is a pretty good promotion...

Help us make money and we'll pay you...

You are 100% right Jimmy. Love the idea, hate the wording.

Considering that this person had at least five opportunities to clarify in the forum I was reading, I knew he wasn't just wording it bad but actually purposefully trying to mislead people...at least it sure LOOKED that way!

Wording aside, I don't know how anyone could think that they would just get $10 paid out to them for signing up. There are offers like that all over the place, and not just in our industry. Casinos give you $10 in free slot play for joining their rewards program. Gas stations will give you $10 when you get one of their credit cards. Department stores will give you $10 store credit when you get one of their loyalty cards or credit cards; same thing with grocery stores. Offers like this can never be redeemed for straight cash.

If people are complaining about not getting $10 paid out to them for signing up, it's not because they're confused, it's because they're trying to exploit a loophole - complaining about the exact terms used or the way things were worded.

Sign up Bonus implies a bonus for signing up. If it is a bonus tied to sales it should be stated that it is a bonus for 2 sales with a $100 minimum. They are two different things. (or three)

Actually Daniel, there are some AMs that have offered $5-10 bonuses for signing up and adding a link somewhere. In the past that was part of a couple of programs I ran. I've stopped and changed to a performance quick start bonus instead because the "put up a link for $5" was actually not very effective in the long run.

One is a sign-up bonus (and money should be paid for just signing up)

The other is a Performance Bonus - and requires an actual sale

AMs who don't know the difference should consider a new career path
