My four year old says that today is "Patrick's Day"... in recognition of, apparently, anyone called Patrick.

I have an unknown quantity of Irish blood. I'm adopted, and the best information I have simply says that I am half Portuguese, and half British/Irish/Scottish... some mixture of those three, plus Portuguese. I don't know if you can still do it these days, but back in the mid-70's you could specify pretty accurately what you wanted as a parent. My mom is Portuguese, my dad is British/Irish/Scottish, and that's what they requested from the adoption agency... and that's what they got!

Given that I grew up in Rhode Island & Massachusetts, it's not that odd a combination. Lots of Portuguese in that part of the country, and lots of immigrants from Ireland, England and Scotland.

That's probably way more personal history than was warranted.

But yeah, I'm a bit Irish.

    My last name is McWilliams

That being said, we actually have very little Irish in our family. Mostly Scottish on both sides, with some sprinkles of Austrian, German, English, and Dutch.

My grandparents were from the Irish part of Eastern Europe. During the pograms, as the Russian Cossacks stormed my maternal grandfather's shtetl, driving our people out, he yelled back at them in Yiddish (with a brogue) "You don't believe we're Irish?"

    No, they didn't.

    Happy St. Patty's Day!

One of my co-workers wore a kilt to work.

Lots of Scotch-Irish in my family. Clan Donnachaidh (Robertson) and a few others. And no, my surname has never been Robertson.

One of my paternal great grandfathers came to America from Scotland (his father was born in Ireland) in the late 1800s.
