    Hosgator Cheats Affiliates
I know this topic has been covered, but I hope someone from CJ is reading this. Today I logged into my account and another $500 was removed. I checked my reports and saw that Hostgator simply removed commission from sales I sent them. The sale went through, but instead of seeing the original sale amount like before, it shows $0 for everything. Besides sending almost every sale commission to "extended", they are reversing over 40% of my sales.

Just in the last month I have had 25+ "missing" sales/commission that simply disappears. I have screen shots of my account which I take almost every day and save to a folder so I can track this.

I have been promoting hostgator a very long time and have not had this problem until this last year. I know the economy is down, that doesn't mean you can cheat your affiliates.

Hostgator needs to be held accountable for this. I know I am not the only one. I would drop them if the traffic I get wasn't organic.

On a side note, does anyone know if I can do anything about it legally?

I do, but like I said its free traffic. So its nothing or something. But that doesn't give them a reason to still cheat affiliates.

Hostgator does not have monopoly on hosting affiliate program. So why not promote a host that pays?

like I said before, I do promote other hosting affiliate programs but I get a lot of traffic for a certain hostgator keywords. So its free traffic. If more people would take a stand against Hostgator on this issue I would join them, but as of now I would rather get something instead of nothing.

I am however looking at alternative methods to transforming the landing page to promote a different hosting company while still keeping my keyword ranking in the search engines for the hostgator keywords.

Has your number of sales suddenly increased? Do you market their product via PPC? (Sounds like you don't) Push coupons? (Their terms say Publishers may use any coupons or promotional codes that are provided through the affiliate program or otherwise available to the public).

I promote hostgator as well, but I probably get 1 or 2 sales per month. No ppc, just organic traffic. I have referred a few friends to them via my links through the years and always got paid. As a host, they are my favorite, so I also like to promote them. But if they are starting to not pay, I would like to know more.

I was kind of shocked to read this thread. I have had nothing but good words to speak about Hostgator. In fact, they are one of the top affiliates I a promote for web hosting. Are you sure that they didn't ask for a refund, because this would negate your sales. I had a couple last month with Inmotion and people got a refund so I didn't get my commissions. I think Hostgator is a big enough company that they don't need to cheat their affiliates.

I have haven't had a problem with them, but if you are really dissatisfied I would promote another hosting company using a .htacess file, so you don't lose your organic hits.

Ok, so after another big reversal from them I ran my reports again. 100% reversed! I only have three pending sales from the past few days.

The coupon codes, if used where found on their site (The usual 20% off ones that used to be on their homepage)

Do you really think that every customer asked for a refund? No.

silver93350, be careful. I started making a lot of money with them and one day they just started reversing orders. Just be careful and log in and check your stats, if you don't it could easily just disappear.

There is only one report that I can still get that displays the information (I still have screen shots) but when you click to get detailed information on the sale it "magically" disappears like it never happened.

I am still looking for an alternative hosting provider to promote.

Wow, man this scares me because one of the top providers I promote on my hosting review site is Hostgator. Been using them for years and years. I am going to be keeping an eye on my affiliate sales on them. I would highly recommend that you go with Inmotion and Fatcow too. They are both accredit A+ with the BBB.

Dumb question, but I don't even know how I would track if they just reversed them. Can you explain that a little to me, please?
    Thanks for the heads up.

If you are partnered with them through CJ then under reports there are a few different ways to check. Most likely under "extended" you will see if a commission is reversed or not. But you really have to dig deep to see if it "magically" disappeared. I just always took screen shots and records each day for the past couple months after noticing my balance drop. But if you don't log in much you would have never noticed.

Out of the 100% reversed, I know of one that was 100% legit (no non-affiliate coupon code, ect.) that signed up and is still using their hosting account today. They follow my blog and it is nice to have this proof besides a stack full of documents and other "known" customers who still host with hostgator that had my commission reversed.

Thanks for the heads up. I am going to have a friend buy it through my affiliate link just so I can test it out. I sure hope they are not shorting people or I am going to be very upset with them. I really don't check CJ very often. Maybe I should!

I would call them and ask to speak with a manager and get them to give you credit. They are a huge company so they should not be doing this BS. Like anyone should be doing it, though.

    Please do keep me informed.

I will keep you updated. I submitted a ticket and sent an email to CJ. Will call both Hostgator and CJ Monday to see whats going on. I am also going through loads of statistics and data so I can provide them with clear, straight to the point proof of this BS.

Lots of folks are still waiting for commissions from hostgator, a quick search here turns up at least two recent threads:

    Hi,

I want to share my experience with Hostgator Affiliate Program.

I have to confirm that indeed Hostgator cheats it's affiliate. I joined their affiliate program a few months back, directly and not through CJ, and recently decided to promote their hosting. I did one "known" referral sale, and I checked the Affiliate report and it showed the "One Sale", with URL, etc. But when I viewed the Commission Report it is "0". I wrote a few emails to their Affiliate Manager for clarifications and even sent snapshots, and the domain name and hosting that was set up referred by me.. and his answers left me bewildered. Lucky I did one lousy sale!!

I will be taking my business elsewhere. If Hostgator can cheat One lousy Referral, imagine how many were eaten up from those who has many unknown referrals. Lucky I did not waste time and money promoting.. almost decided to sign up their Reseller Program!!

My mistake is to Join a Merchant directly. better through a Network. Lessons Learned the hard way!!

    Philep
