Luke Andrew Coley - Born 4/9/10
Born: 4/9/10 at 4:20pm (on his due date!)
    Weight: 9 pounds 8 ounces
    Height: 21.5 inches

After two routine births, we expected number three to be a cinch. No such luck.

As of last Tuesday, Luke was still breech. The doctor wanted to schedule a C-section, but we wanted to give him every opportunity to turn and be born naturally.

FRIDAY morning at 2am, Kara went into labor. He had been fairly active but we didn't think he had turned. We went to the hospital and they prepped her for an emergency C-section. Before they were getting ready to wheel her in, around 6am, they did an ultrasound and discovered that he had turned. We were thankful for the good news!

After another 10 hours of labor, it was finally time to start pushing. The pushing wasn't moving him down and his heart rate was indicating that he was under distress, so the doctor made the decision that an emergency C-section was necessary. They rushed her to the operating room. Her epidural had worn off, so they put her under.

After the doctor made the initial incision through the abdomen, there was Luke's elbow, sticking out of a ruptured uterus. They quickly got him out and got him breathing, then turned their attention to discovering the extent of the damage. Several other things had been damaged, so they called in two specialists. It took 5 hours of surgery to get everything figured out, put back where it belonged, connected, and repaired.

Luke was initially sent to NICU for observation, but he was doing great so I was able to get him brought back to the labor and delivery room where I was waiting. I called family and close friends to let them know that Luke was here and about the complications and spent a lot of time praying.

They finally brought Kara to the postpartum room about midnight, where Luke and I were waiting. She hadn't been told anything, so I gave her a short version and helped her hold Luke.

SATURDAY, the recovery started. I told her the full story of what all happened, and all of her doctors were by to see her during the day. During the day, they were able to remove her oxygen, IV, catheter, and sensors. They got her to sit up, then later to stand, and then after that to walk and to use the bathroom.

SUNDAY, she has continued her recovery. The pain has decreased quite a bit. She was able to take a couple walks up and down the hall and this afternoon she was able to shower (much to her relief). She's doing well enough that I'm able to leave her there this evening (which is good because we have very limited childcare options and Gabe and Grace have bounced around between several friends that we don't want to inconvenience any more).

I'm back home this evening, and online for the first time since Thursday night (other than limited access through my iPhone). Tomorrow we hope to find out when she'll be able to come home. I'm suspecting that it'll be Tuesday. (Kara's hoping it's tomorrow.)

Babies are usually incredibly alert for the first hour or so, and the nurses were kind enough to let me know when and where to be, between the operating room and NICU so I could see him during that time. They stopped the cart long enough for me to snap a pic and admire him.

He's been doing a ton of sleeping since then (which is also normal). Birth (and circumcision) are pretty tramatic things to a little body.

Wow, Michael. Congratulations to you and Kara. We wish Kara a fast recovery.

Luke actually resembles the picture in your avatar, without the glasses and beard, of course - but MUCH better looking.

I need to post his and Grace's newborn pictures side by side. If they weren't 4 1/2 years apart, they could almost be twins.

Congratulations Michael, he really looks just like you. I keep picturing him with a bottle in one hand and a steak in the other. I hope Kara has a speedy recovery.
