I process a huge number of datafeeds each day. An interesting trend I've seen is where affiliate managers think that a datafeed contains certain data, when in fact it doesn't.
If affiliate managers can encourage simple programmatic testing of datafeed output, they could really improve the quality of their feeds.
A simple approach to ensuring the integrity of your datafeed output is to have one person write the datafeed exporter and have another person write a datafeed importer. Run each datafeed export through the importer after each code change to your back-end prior to deploying the new code to production.
The test importer performs should do the following, in Pseudo-Code
For each line in the datafeed output
Grab SKU and query production database for all product attributes
For Each EXPECTED product attribute in the datafeed output
Compare output datafeed attribute to attribute retrieved from database
That's it. This will let you know when you put attributes in the wrong columns, let you know when you mangle attributes, let you know when attributes are missing, when attributes aren't formatted properly, etc.
JamesMerchants, any data you provide to Google Shopping should also be in your affiliate network datafeed. More data means more sales!
