Pro Flowers Being Outed Online for Scam-Type Tactics
I've come across several mentions lately that Pro Flowers is using "scam" type tactics with its advertising, the latest being this past Mother's Day.

According to the complaints, Pro Flowers promotions for, "$19.99 with a free special savings of $6.99 as a free gift for the vase and free shipping" really is not so free.

Apparently the free shipping only comes after you join their $100 fee club. Also, shoppers thought that $6.99 would be deducted from their bill.

You can see some of the complaints here.

Now I'm wondering if I should promote them. If this really is how they run things I don't blame people for being upset.

FYI...Proflowers is owned by LiberyMedia, which owns a LOT of stuff. Included is the companies they own is IAC (Interactive Corp). IAC owns such things as MindSpark (Zwinky, Webfetti, cursormania, iwon, etc), Pronto. There's a bunch more with questionable online marketing tactics.

Not all of LIbertyMedia's companies operate in the more "aggressive" online marketing arena, but there's not a shortage of them either.

I wouldn't promote these people if they paid $100 an order. I ordered flowers from them for my mom in the nursing home. They were dumped off, not in a vase but in a box, and no staff was directed to put them in water. They wilted. And my mom, with her dementia, was certainly not able to do much about it. I emailed them and got no reply to this complaint. I would not order from them EVER again and I would not promote them EVER.

Furthermore, they keep sending me promotional emails despite my requests to stop.

    Leeann,

ProFlowers did promote, "Flowers from $19.99 with a free glass vase." Shipping & handling fees are additional and vary by delivery date (fees for each delivery date are listed when selecting a delivery date). All charges and fees are clearly listed on the checkout page prior to a customer verifying their order and being charged. After completing an order, some customers are presented with an offer from our third-party rewards partner to receive a rebate on their shipping fees for joining their program. This is a membership program with a monthly fee. All fees associated with the membership are clearly displayed (not just in fine print) prior to the customer enrolling in the program.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about the ProFlowers Affiliate Program, please reach out to me so that I may address them.

Actually I just realized I'm not an affiliate of proflowers. I used to be. But I still find so many complaints about the company pretty amazing.

That is a sad story. You must have been soooo disappointed. And then to add salt to the wound, they don't even bother to answer your emails. Sigh...

1800flowers does the same thing. I get emails all the time about special offers or coupon codes from their fresh rewards program.

When you look at what products its valid for and you try to buy that product it doesn't work. When you contact 1800flowers they tell you its because its under 20 dollars or something but the terms and conditions don't say that and the 19.99 item is listed as valid on the coupon page.

They also say they offer free shipping on stuff but then tack on a handling fee that isn't tacked on when you pay for shipping.

any program that signs a customer up and bills every month for the privilege of being in the program. they usually offer a magazine or free shipping.

some appear in the vitamins/supplements vertical.

zooma, I see where Proflowers offers this coupon --
    Free weekday delivery
Enjoy free shipping for weekday delivery on select bouquets. Without this coupon shipping charges start at $12.99. Coupon automatically applied at checkout.
    Added:5/17/2010
    Code:No code required

So does that mean customers get free shipping?

Would that be Affinion Group that Visa just cracked down on?

Then there is ProFlowers prolific use of about every piece of contextual adware out there. Not talking about their affiliates, but ProFlowers themselves. It's been going on for years. Not that ProFlowers is alone in that one....it's a browser war between the major flower merchants popping on each other and anything flower/gift related.

If a merchant is engaging in such marketing tactics directly themselves, then a lot of other stuff isn't very surprising.

Correct, for a bouquet on the site that advertises free standard shipping. That promotion is product specific and is unrelated to the free shipping rewards program offered post-checkout.

From looking at other complaints about the free shipping offer, it looks like the shipping rebate offered post checkout is through FreeShipping.com (who is an affiliate themselves).

So affiliates send traffic which may be passed off to another affiliate post checkout?

Internet marketing is a crazy world at times.

I have an employee who recently ordered from ProFlowers. She said her experience was a great one. There were no deceptive practices and what she ordered was completed correctly.

She said that the website walked her through the whole process which was cool. When it came to vases, it was one step in the process. She was given options that were easy to follow and while the flowers did come in a box, it included the vase.

She told me that she would definitely order from them again.

I hate companies that have the rebill. They take advantage of people that don't know how to use the web. This happened to my mom and I had to call and chew some one out at the other end for engaging in such shallow practices. I looked at the sames page and the check box was hidden inside of a banner ad image. Most people would overlook it so easily.

Such a shame more merchants are trying to cheat people, kudos for those merchants that don't because more affiliates will be marketing your products.

    So true,
I've no word for these people. They are the scum of the web.
    They should be so ashamed...
What can we expect from a company related to IAC? A company run by a bunch of thieves...
Like Kellie said "FYI...Proflowers is owned by LiberyMedia, which owns a LOT of stuff. Included is the companies they own is IAC (Interactive Corp)."

Hey, I'm as tech savvy as they come and even I fell for it! Bought movie tickets online for a friend's bday, and was prompted to "click here to receive offers"... it did NOT clearly state I was signing up for a monthly "club". When I noticed the charges on my credit card (4 months later), I called expecting a fight. They reversed the charges immediately - I'm guessing because I never even logged into the account.

Not to derail the thread.. just feel very strongly about this concept.

Are there ANY floral merchants worth promoting?! GAH - The one I'm currently promoting was recomended here at ABW and the Mother's Day flowers I and my sister sent my mother through that merchant were dismal and very disappointing. Certainly not worth the price we paid.

I'm now wondering which flower merchant to replace them with. I've tried many and have had issues with all of them.

First, let me say thanks to Jeff for coming here to face the concerns. I strongly disagree with many of the things your company is doing, but I have a lot of respect for you for being here.

I've wondered the same thing. I've tried several (as a consumer), with mixed results, and have turned back to local florists.

I wonder if floral companies realize how damaging it is to send out poor arrangements. When a company is involved in condolences they should go the extra mile to make sure things are right.

I just don't get business sometimes. It seems like the time, effort and expense it takes to excel has to be more profitable than the expense of offering substandard products and a poor customer experience. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the big bucks can only be made by cutting corners, blindsiding customers and dropping standards.

Maybe it is time for Pro Flowers (and similar companies) to hire management consultants or quality control experts.
