I didn't get it because when I was approached by a rep from Walmart's program at Affiliate Summit, as soon as I told her I was a blogger, she told me I couldn't join.

I cloak all of my affiliate links. I'm not changing for Walmart.com. They can drop me if they want.

Why would they have issues with bloggers???

I honestly have no idea... she said "oohhh I'm sorry, we don't accept bloggers in the program", and I said, rather haltingly, "really? um... but... why?" to which she replied, "it's just the policy, I'm sorry". Then my attention was grabbed by someone else and she ducked away, so I didn't really get into an in-depth discussion about it. It was during the Affiliate Showcase at Summit back in January.

Because of the Walmart blogging scandal.

This incident also played heavily into the FTC's guidelines for disclosure of financial gain by bloggers.

Coming in tandem with the TM Bidding policy, it sounds like Walmart is buying into some of the rheortic out there that associates link cloaking with affiliate fraud, often times in the context of TM bidders using it to as a way to hide the TM bidding.

Of course this isn't accurate representation, but some believe it.

Seems like a dumb thing to restrict.

I think their lawyers basically write this stuff, without the technical knowledge necessary to word the TOS correctly. This is the third time I've seen them put in weird TOS items. The first two times I've actually had conversations with their affiliate team about the TOS changes. From now on I'm just going to ignore them...

I make sure they will see referrer information and if they visit the referrer pages they will see redirects that land on wal-mart product pages. That's enough IMHO. How the links are structured is not their business.
Merchants, any data you provide to Google Shopping should also be in your affiliate network datafeed. More data means more sales!
