    Can't verify my site??
In Google webmaster tools I am attempting to select the http://www.url.com as the preferred URL to my site, rather than http://url.com

However, it says I must verify I own http://url.com first. My webmaster dashboard says I have verified my ownership.

    what gives?

Google is far from perfect and I saw many, many problems on Webmaster Tools. They have really a poor programming team, there. The best is to wait for them to correct their own mistakes. It can take weeks or worse.

Quick question... Did you verify ownership of the www version and the non www version?

You can use mod_rewrite in Apache to rewrite urls
Insert the code in your .htaccess-file in your website's root folder

    1.# force www in url
    2.RewriteEngine On
    3.RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.example\.com [NC]
    4.RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]
5.# END force www in url

If you're using WordPress you can use a plugin.

The host should not interfere with your WP plugin.

If you have your own installation of Wordpress on your own domain, it should not involve Wordpress.com. However, if you are using GoDaddy as your host you may be in a whole different scenario. GoDaddy is a good place to buy domains (sometimes) but they are a crappy host and offer weird hybrid WP packages. You will not always have the same controls on a GD hosted domain as you would on others. If your site is hosted on Wordpress.com you can not add affiliate links - it is against their rules.

    Enroll site as: (a) http:// and (b) www.(domain name)

I just got a new domain name and launched a new web site. I think I ran into this too. In Google's Webmaster Tools, you need to enroll the web site twice. First, as http://domainname.tld and Second, as www.domainname.tld

After you do that, you can then specify the preferred URL for them to show in SERPS.

My other web sites are all shown twice in the Webmaster Tools list, without the www and with it, and I selected the preferred URL for each of them to begin with www in the SERPS.

Lanny is correct. This was a change to webmaster tools about a year or so ago, before you didn't have to verify both versions of the domain to do the preferred url.

I did what Lanny said a while back, but I have an addition. After I got my www(.)example.com site changed to www prefered I then went back and deleted the example.com subscription in WMT. I couldn't see a reason for both then, and my www(.)example.com stayed like I wanted it to be.
