Exclamation (CJ) F-Secure’s Mikko Hypponen Gives World Cup Cybercriminals the Red Card

It’s not just soccer fans around the world who are interested in the FIFA World Cup, which is kicking off in South Africa on Friday, June 11. The huge global interest in the event also attracts cybercriminals who see it as a major opportunity to make money by selling fake tickets, attracting soccer fans to drive-by download websites (websites that download malware without the users knowledge) and carrying out phishing attacks camouflaged with a World Cup theme.

Mikko Hypponen, Chief Research Officer at F-Secure, said, “I urge soccer fans everywhere to give cybercriminals the red card by refusing to be fooled by their dirty tricks. In addition to online vigilance against World Cup spam, scams and hoaxes, it’s also crucial to keep computers patched and up-to-date to avoid getting hit by drive-by downloads from dubious websites.”

Today, the San Francisco Chronicle published an article that portrays Mikko as a security expert on the potential for mobile device attacks. This coverage stems from an interview reporter, Alejandro Martínez-Cabrera, had with Mikko at RSA. The article, “Security firms gird for attacks on smart phones,” includes several quotes from Mikko on how F-Secure and other security firms, are preparing for the onset of more attacks on mobile devices as the popularity of smart phones increase.

Here are a few key excerpts that mention F-Secure:
    • "Nobody's making money at the moment with mobile security. But all the players assume that sooner or later we will see a major outbreak or some other major event that will change the situation forever," said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at Finland-based mobile security leader F-Secure.
    • Hypponen of F-Secure believes the security community has been able to stave off a security crisis in the mobile realm by working closely with operating system developers, device manufacturers and service providers to build security into mobile platforms from the ground up.
    • "While we haven't been able to completely prevent all mobile viruses, we have at least been able to delay the first global outbreak," he said. "Unfortunately, this will not last forever."
