Caffeine Update Complete - How Did/Will it Affect You?
Helping my Father-in-Law out with his sites and noticed that the traffic to one plummeted yesterday. In checking for Google updates, I noticed that Google Caffeine was just completed - see http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/20...-nearly-a-year
Have to wonder if this kicked in. My overall traffic was up yesterday.

More seriously, it appears that we'll have to wait a bit to see how the "new" Goog treat us and our various web endeavors.

    OK, back to topic

As far as I understand caffeine should have no impact on your traffic.

I don't have a definitive answer but it seems that newish, low Pagerank sites are being hurt bad.

And ones that are duplicate content.

So I would make sure your sites are not seen as either of those.

The first one by make your site looks aged, more links, better links, linking profiles on other sites like Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook etc.

And then maybe checking content with copyscape or by searching for one of your sentences with quotes around it. You might be surprised if your father just lifted some text verbatim.

I had a client that did that.

Have to wonder if this kicked in. My overall traffic was up yesterday.
    Good question.
Some of my sites are up, some are down.
I've some sites started 15 years ago, with no update in the last 3, 4 years and my traffic is WAY UP.
Some blogs started 4, 5 years ago with daily updates, lots of content, are DOWN.
New sites are still doing OK, up one day, down the next one.
Compared to the last two months, my income is down 30%. Is it Google or just the normal traffic end of may, beginning of june. I'll say, if I compare to other years, it's roughly the same.
I've never spent one dime on Google, Yahoo or Bing PPC. Only organic traffic and I'm still doing great.
Are Google SERPs better? I don't think so. Google is trying to squeeze every cent from their SERPs. Scrapping content from other sites, giving bad experience to people searching what they need on the web.
I'll say, Google is on the way down. Next, please!

They might have seen the word analytics in the domain and figured you were out to get them

After taking a look, an SEO spruce up wouldn't hurt.

Good point. Was it the Caffeine, or my tin foil hat SSL shenanigans?

Yes was testing out the Woopra.

Now it might be nothing but when I first started with Wordpress last year, made some early mistakes with the wordpress setup, how the urls are made, what's indexed etc. And based on what I've read and input from other members, you're making some of the same mistakes. People were worried about getting their tags indexed and duplicate content so I had it setup where it doesn't get indexed just to be sure, yours are indexed. I would get rid of the date in the url, that kind of thing. Might have absolutely nothing to do with this recent update but every little bit helps. Some banner misalignment in the right column, some other things. I see you have the paid version of Traction, was thinking of getting that one myself.

Actually, Trust's comment on SEO raises an interesting point. If you have a blog that you treat as a part time hobby etc, and don't update frequently, or SEO, or set up to succeed, Google Caffeine, Google Florida, Google Mayday et al are irrelevant.

Work, ingenuity, and smarts drive traffic.

"Work, ingenuity, and smarts drive traffic."

Of course but this is a Google Caffeine thread and you just got zapped, so you don't want to do things to kill off any free traffic if possible. And if your setup is causing some kind of duplicate content issue and it's something you can fix, you should.

Well they got it out right after the holidays just like they said last fall. Must have meant Memorial day holiday. Haven't checked any stats to see what it may or may have not done.

Right Trust. There's some NoFollow NoIndex settings I haven't tweaked yet. that's easy enough, regardless of how much I care about the SE traffic.
