    The Mediocre Truth About Google
It's always interesting to me the opinions we all bandy about here on ABW about Google, and their quest, and, frankly, successful acquisition of visitor data to YOUR websites.

Trust and I have gone back and forth about the SSL search parameter, and its potential impact on web analytics (he's probably right). We've dissected as a group the impact of Mayday and Caffeine. We know that Google knows things we don't want them to know, but, IMHO, there's little we can do to prevent that 67% of the time, regardless if we have their Javascipt installed or not.

    So...

Google can translate that data into preferential bidding on Action generating key phrases in AdWords. That is to say they tend to know what key phrases convert at 7.6% as opposed to 4.3% Therefore, they can charge a premium.

Sadly, they ALSO have an advantage over most affiliates promoting through GAN. That javascript may well tell them both sides of the equation, which I'm afraid to say 90% of active affiliates don't have... This:

    • Keyword/Source/Medium to the Affiliate site.
    • Pageviews and Clicks that lead to a GAN merchant site.
    • Conversion Path/Goal Funnel on the Merchant Site.
    • Revenue

On one hand, that's fair. It's their technology. It's their network.
On the other, you might be sleepwalking through that scenario.

In the final analysis, and after drinking in a discussion Trust and I had, I'd say that affiliates who promote GAN merchants should NOT be using Google analytics...... If you're a Google hater

    You're connecting dots for them.

If you don't care... carry on.

Just be aware of the connection.

That all said... I still think GA is a viable platform for studying archival web analytics for free. There are other platforms, but few offer the segmentation that GA offers.
