    I was so shocked and amazed to get this link exchange request today that I just had to share it! The surname and URLs have been changed for this post. And I bolded the really stupid parts (the parts responsible for my shock and amazement).

    [Begin email]

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    "Dear WebMaster/Site Owner,
    My name is John "Putzenheimer," and I'm the Webmaster of a site-with-dumb-exchange-software.com .
    I wanted to let you know that I've just placed a link to
    leaders-1st-content-site.com.
    You can find the link to your site here:
    .htm]http://www.[URL-removed].htm
    I've used this text to link to your site:
    "Cannot find server"
    This is the description I've used for your site:
    "Cannot find server"
    A link back to my site would also be nice using :
    [An SEOful URL]
    [A Real Site Name]
    [A Real Site Description complete with keywords]
    If you link back to me, I'll put your site at the top of its category !
    ;-)
    Thanks
    John "Putz"
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [End email]

    Gee, just what I always wanted! A nice listing at the top of the category--under "CANNOT FIND SERVER!" Woopee!

    Duh!

    When I checked out his link page (a typical crummy robo-directory trying to disguise its automated nature), there were 2 other sites with that "steller" heading, and also about 6 sites that only had a link number as their anchor text.

    People really need to be sure that their software isn't doing anything stupid before letting those emails out!

    you know I think this is what really killed all my traffic...people emailing me saying that they had place my link on their farm, before I knew it, my link is on 2 dozen crappy casino sites. took me a while asking them to take my link off, hehe.

    I hope you told them to kindly remove your link from their crappy website.

    I keep getting a request from someone who has a dating site.

    The fact that every other word in the email is spelled wrong drives me crazy. But what really drives me crazy is the claim that our sites will be great matches.

    To think that my site will attract people who are dating tells me this person doesn't have a clue what my site is about. Oh bother.

    The lame-ity continues!

    I wrote back telling him to either remove the link entirely or use my real site name and description.

    I signed it,

    "Sincerely,

    My Real Name"

    I just got a response back, which began with "Dear Sincerely!" In it he claimed to have fixed the site name and description.

    So I went over to his page and checked. Sure enough...not changed.

    Not sure whether to bother writing any more, as it seems to be a hopeless case. Granted, he might have just been in the bad habit of sending the email before uploading changed pages. But with the use of "Dear Sincerely," I wouldn't bank on it...

    (@ ElectricPixel--I figure one more link from a lame site won't hurt in and of itself, since there's a zillion SE-scraper junk sites linking to my stuff already...)

    If I was you Sincerely I would forget about it.
    Sounds like everything including his/her brain is on auto-pilot.
