10 Common Errors “Spell Check” Won’t Catch
While we can rely on a spell checker to catch glaring errors, a computer can’t pick up on all careless mistakes, especially if the word could be correct in a different context. Often word misuse is our mistake. The English language is full of homonyms, or words that have different meanings but sound and look similar, which makes it easy to confuse proper usage.

    Wow - great link.

I am a real stickler for proper grammar and syntax, and when I see errors like these I have an overpowering compulsion to correct them.

Confusing plural and possessive seems to me to be the most common, glaring and painful type of error that abounds, followed by the improper usage of the "there, their, and they're" triumvirate.

    The curse of Spell-Check!

Offhand, I'd say that the majority of Americans don't know when to use apostrophes (and when not to). I used to do technical writing and editing, and in a web context, once offered a web site editing service based on the premise that typos and grammar mistakes can lose sales.

Completely agree! there are some very silly mistakes there, you can only miss them if you don't read what you write.

    Cheers!
