That topic could fill several books.

It is hard work to get backlinks, there are no shortcuts.

One of the merchants we manage has tools to help you find sites to ask for backlinks from, here is their vimeo video channel that has a couple of videos specifically about backlink building:

The easiest way to get backlinks is to provide a useful, valuable site. People create links to those all the time.

How many links do you think Wikipedia went out and solicited? Do you think they ever tried link swaps? Buying links? Comment spam? Nope. They don't have to.

Ask for one. I like to hope it's true but people don't automatically link to the "best" content, talk about it in social media, etc., unless you are visible first.

So go out there. Blog. Guest blog. Post articles. And literally, ask. Response may not be high, but at least I got dozens of high quality links that way.

Do it strategically though so that your chosen keywords - start with middle to long tail - start to rank after a while and people find you.

With useful and quality content, at that point, it starts to roll as people link to you without asking.

What Michael said. Build a useful site for people, not search engines.

While I agree that this is the best method for most site owners to utilize, it's not realistic for the average affiliate site, unfortunately (thin, useless sites are what so many people teach).

As stated by the person above me, Articles are very good. Blog posts, if you can write for other people, using links in relative forums (but not spamming) - as long as you're actually engaging in good conversation!

Basically, it's either go out and find them or build a site that will produce them simply by providing valuable content.

Maybe that's why the average affiliate doesn't make any money.

BTW, if you want to go that route, then Wikipedia, as used in your example, is not making a profit either. It's the reason they ask for donations.

Who taught you to be a bad affiliate?

Affiliates are generally self taught and this forum is one place they tend to learn.... if they are actually paying attention and want to learn.

Wikipedia is a non-profit project. If they did run ads, they would probably gross well in excess of a million dollars per day.

Yes, that is bad teaching... to use a site like wikipedia that ranks well in the search engines for virtually every term imaginable, has more natural backlinks than probably any other site on the web as an example of how to do things right. Why in the world would somebody want to do things in such a way as to attract more web traffic than amazon and ebay combined? How stupid!!!! BAD TEACHING!

Maybe using 302 temporary redirects to permanently moved pages would give smalltimers like us an edge over the big boys. That's the ticket!

Whoa, who said I was a bad affiliate? I'm saying the average affiliate learns wrong methods right off the bat...regarding SEO. Thin sites, spamming for links, etc.

Wow dude, you're going way overboard there. When we speak of the average affiliate, we're not speaking of someone who's got a big huge review site - we're speaking of someone who tried to follow the advice of some Clickbank guru. You're twisting the topic for no apparent reason.

Wikipedia is not running ads, so why use them? Wikipedia is provided with UGC, whereas 98% of affiliate sites are not. Where's the comparison there for average affiliates and big companies?

Michael is right. And thin Affiliate sites do nothing for the integrity of this industry.

Nice try.... hiding a spammy link drop in between two seemingly helpful, yet eerily similar posts from another new member.

One effective "SEO technique" could be to build own affiliate program
your affiliates will build back-links from relevant places to your web page

even if you are affiliate alone, you can sell something on your webpage and build around it affiliate program, which builds back-links to your website

VERY few affiliate links are backlinks and if they are, they do not help SEO. All links are not created equal.
