For affiliates - how is July performance?
Is anyone seeing a summer slowdown?

Last year my sites had slowed to a crawl during the summer months so I was expecting the same this year. Surprisingly, performance has been steady (not spectacular, but not the dip I expected).

I'm trying to determine if this is a result of new features rolled out last fall/winter... or the economy in general.

I realize there are seasonal effects for certain niches, I'm just trying to get an overall sense...

So you must be talking about a site that is about 2 years old with no other annual data to compare with? I think it would be best to compare your own data from previous years if you had any. As you said, it would hard to compare with others since we may not have the same niches or may not be in the same website life cycle (if there is such a thing) as yours. Personally, my site is still fairly new so not much historical data.

    Thanks for the reply..

I'm using my own data, just trying to determine the reason for site performance year over year (not comparing to the others, nor looking for specifics).

I follow published stats on retail sales, consumer confidence & all that, but just want to get a sense from the affiliate community...

ok, I understand summer months can be slow... and I've been doing this long enough to experience the cycles. However I'm not asking the question in that context..

Published retail sales indicate a recovery is taking place - this is a UK report: http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKLNE66Q00O20100727

In the US retail sales show mixed results (overall), but some stores are reporting surprisingly strong earnings (Beige Book also came out today, which is the Fed's view on the economy).

I've not seen the summer slowdown that I expected, could be because of this..

That's good and the important thing, how you're doing. I'm pretty steady. But the answer to the question is the same, every single month. Some are going to be good, others steady, others worse off. It could be because of what you just posted, could be your niche and the time of the season, it could because of a search engine shift, etc.

One of the most difficult things about affiliate marketing is figuring out what you did right/wrong. And yes, I agree that every affiliate (and merchant) will experience ups/downs at different times for different reasons.

But overall retail sales are still meaningful, even though merchant performance differs - for me, the bigger picture is part of the process.

I was just trying to get a sense on the affiliate perspective.. expectations vs reality. Consumer confidence is a real stat, consider this my attempt to measure affiliate confidence.

Was just reading - Economists see tepid recovery deep into 2011

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38457713...t_a_crossroads

"Despite such risks, 55 percent of the economists described the recovery as "on track" as of the middle of the year. The rest said it was "faltering."

So basically, they have no idea. I don't think anybody does.

The last quarter/holiday shopping season should give more of a clue of how consumers are feeling.

It mainly depends on the niche that you are promoting but summer sales are slower in general.

Has nothing to do with you working more or less it's the simple fact that people are on holidays and they are reluctant to spend their money on something else than holidays

    Cheers!
