I have recently been getting emails from people who want to advertise on my content site. I don't have any idea where to begin with pricing. Is there a ratio that people use for advertising costs in relation to hits? Someone please enlighten me or point me to the right place.

One site you may want to look at is marketbanker.com I ran across them the other day. They let you sell ads on your site via either text links or banners. They break down the websites that are selling space according to hits/rankings. You can check out some of the sites that might be similar to yours and see what they are charging. If you find a big enough sample, it might give you an idea of what the market is willing to pay. Be sure to make sure that they actually have ads on their site, as it will let you know that people have actually paid their asking price.
