I was checking out some of the incoming links to my site when I found this one...

    http://www.zone-h.org/en/defacements/

I was able to enter my domain and search for hacking exploits. My site has been hacked a total of three times (so far), and they even had links to mirrors of the defaced pages.

I wonder how much PageRank I get for that?

Been hacked 3 times too! They put on the site that they are doing this to let me know my site is not secure. Why thanks! NOT!

Hum, not sure when they started collecting data, but I searched for a site that I know has been hacked and they have 2 hacks reported. The site *was* hacked twice, but the second date is incorrect. It was hacked prior to the first reported incident, but not hacked on the date of the second incident they report. The site had been moved off that server by that date.

I would hope that if your site was hacked, you already knew about it?

I check my sites daily if I'm not specifically working on them. Hacks are rare but server errors are not so rare.

I haven't found monitoring services effective.

Being hacked means that someone has gained access to the server on which your site is hosted.

Usually they change the home page for something that boasts how 'clever' they are. That is often called a 'defacement'.

That's pretty mild to what they could do if they wanted.

Got it! Thanks Sloth for the info/explaination.

Guess I've not been Hacked yet. But, I am getting mighty tired of the 12 (or more) daily attempts to infect me via email attachments. Those people are not so clever - thank god. Wish they would all find something more constructive to do with their cleverness & time.

There's a difference between getting your server hacked and getting your home computer hacked.

In the case of the server, the hack is visible to the world, but your hosting company will clean up the mess for you (if they're any good).

If it's your home computer, it's private but it's down to you to sort out. I've had messes that were uncleanable, so it's down to having a full recent restorable backup (three important words there) and reformatting your computer like new.

Of course don't open these attachments, but they'll get you sooner or later so be prepared.
