Google Instant Search is changing SEO and PPC today
If you have not heard there was a large Press Conference in SanFran Wednesday and Google is announcing a continuation of the autosuggest answers while you type.

This will change the SERPs while you type and starts from the first character.

    Here is a video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElubRNRIUg4

    There is more information here:

    http://adwords.google.com/support/aw...&answer=187309

You should see it in Google if you are logged in and in the USA today.

Or this might work if you are outside the USA or not logged on:

    http://www.google.com/webhp?sclient=psy

This is revolutionary IMHO. It may not be good for your business though. It will change how people search.

It will also affect Adwords impressions as after 3 seconds it counts as an impression and it is showing ads while someone types.

I see no ill effects for it for SEO but I see that adwords advertisers are going to have to add broad keywords back into their accounts.

Well, if you're targeting a 3+ word keyword, it seems like it could have an effect. A person searching would start to type in the first two words, have one of the huge sites who ranks well for those first two words pop up and stop there.. They wouldn't search your long tail keyword as G suggested a nice big site to them like Amazon before they could finish.

Well with the site I looked at where I hold the #1 keyword for lets say "blue widget review"

As I am typing I get to "blue wid" and my site shows up in #1. I don't see a problem with a 3 word keyword search yet.

Most people are more likely to keep on typing what they're going to type. The blinky jumpy crap that's going on now will probably serve more to annoy than to captivate.

I looked at the video and it just felt way over hyped. It will be interesting to see if real people actually like it as much as the Google team.

As far as SEO I really think they hope to make those efforts irrelevant to their search results. They have made a lot of progress in that direction.

I think it could have a minor push towards more general keywords, correctly spelled words, and shorter phrases, but I don't see it as a major game changer.

Wow google is correcting things quite a bit with spelling.

Type "ABESTWEB" slowly on Google Instant and even with the whole word typed, we are not the top spot or on the front page.

Only until you hit enter does the interface check the complete Google index and notice that there is a website by that name with a high Pagerank.

The AJAX interface is checking and caching a minor database of queries and sites.

    Is this web censorship?

Google has every right to display search results on THEIR website as they see fit.

Yes to the right of the query box is a drop down. It can be changed to turn it off.

Thank you. The "annoyance" is now gone.

They say their research shows "people scan the page faster than they type".. but on my laptop anyway, I see a whole 2 (or maybe 3) instant serps while typing, then the fold. In order to see more of the instant serps I have to scroll down.

I agree with the others who said no game changer.

I was going to try "personalized gifts"

    I typed per

and the drop down showed the first result was personalized military car mats

    so i clicked it

    and...

the mail order shoppe ranked #1

    so... I like it

    All my best,
    Billy

Right, people who click on the long tail keyword in the suggested search will still see your site. But what about the people who start tying personalized mili, stop and see dogtagsonline as a suggested site. They stop typing and go to that site instead. That's what i was talking about 3+ word keywords.

Edit: I typed in 'per' and 'personalized military car mats' was not the first suggestion. Perkins was. You must be signed in and your search history saved.

Most people don't go to google.com to do their searches. They use their toolbar search in the top of their browser so the annoying instant search is not even noticed.

The reason I noticed is because I am an AM and it is posted on the forums, etc. But then to see it I have to open a new tab, go to google.com, and then type in a widget search to see what all the fuss is about. Otherwise I wouldn't have noticed. I suspect that would be the same with most people.

Great point. I wonder what the breakdown is of google.com searches vs other places?

And what about people who search G via the search box at the top of browser (or god forbid.. the address bar)?

Meh... I don't see this as a big deal. If your site has relevant, good content, it'll be displayed.

I agree with those who say it doesn't really change anything... plus it's completely freaking annoying.

    Super duper annoying.

Before I realized what was going on, I found the site I was looking for, but typed a few extra letters and completely lost it. Took me 5 minutes to find it again. Argh.

I did both serches on google.com without login and with login. I didn't see the flashing results as showing on the video.

I'm glad I won't get the annoying feature.

But curious why I don't see the blinky thing...
