I have been seeing some sites with the colored scrollbars and stuff...do any of you have an opinion on the worth of such html tricks? Does it make an impression and create repeat visitors or is it just useless fluff best left to personal cutesie sites?

I tend to associate colored scrollbars with blogs. (Don't do it!)

Colored scroll bars remind me of kiddie GeoCities sites, you know the ones...they take 5 or 6 minutes to load, have lots of Java and Flash on them, etc.

I have seen a few that were integrated into the color scheme of the site very nicely, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. What is the benefit to the site visitor?

Keep the color on your site, not the bars.

I am first and foremost a website designer. IMHO, colored scrollbars can be done tastefully.

Example: www.amman.com

The only time I really cringe is when they are pink or purple.

Example: www.rjourdan.com

I used color scroll bars on one of my sites a while back and it didn't make a difference. I agree it can be done tastefully but who needs the extra code mucking things up. People don't really care about scroll bars IMO.

I think this site has used a purple scrollbar quite tastefully...maybe it is the feel of the site that allows it to be that way.

I like them and use them - if its done tastefully they are nice, play wiht it yourself and see if you like it.

<style type="text/css">
<!--
body { scrollbar-base-color: #6666A8; scrollbar-arrow-color: #FFFF33; }
-->

I hardly consider a single line in a stylesheet to be "tricked out".

When I think tricked out, I think of the sites that small business owners post to the non-web/affiate boards that I frequent, citing how "cool" their new whiz-bang flash site is. It is cutting-edge, after all.

I have a field day. "So, how many orders has it generated?"

"huh?"

Then I point them to Brett Tabke's "26 steps to 15k a day", specifically point "C"

I've been called a "hater" by one and called an ambulance chaser by several.
