In my opinion it is impossible to say to our customers: you have to install a program to avoid parasiteware. On the one hand this could be suspicious to them on the other most of them do not know how to configure such a program correctly.
A simple and 100% way is to establish a host file with blocking entries and we could here together work out such a hostfile and the customers can copy this hostfile ( shown on our websites ) to their windows directory.
Setting up such a hostfile and editing it is very very simple and results are 100%
If for example I do not want to go to ebates, the entry of that hostfile is:

    127.1.1.1 www.ebates.com

and if I do not want to goto cj.com the entry is

    127.1.1.1 www.cj.com

We could put together the addresses of paratiteware and write it into a hostfile, and 100% the customers PC can not connect to the parasites.

The idea is not new, but it works.
There are already programs out there, that kill affiliate banners and affiliate links that way (updating the host. file in the windows system directory).
They kill links to: qksrv.net, bfast.com, linksynergy.com and others.
Thank's god, that not much people use that tools yet.

    Carsten,
it only kills links to websites which are content of the host file. If qksrv is not part of the host file you are always able to access all qksrv links. The same is for bfast links, linkshare files or other aff. prog. websites
if there is no entry in the host file like:

    127.1.1.1 www.qksrv.net

then all links are accessible. If we affiliate will set up a hostfile with all entries of parasiteware links, the customer is not able to access these links.

Kazaa Lite has used the HOST file to block ads from virtually every major ad network. Blocking ads seems like a good idea at first, but then people take it too far. Kazaa Lite is costing most of us lots of money. I've found it very hard to explain to people the difference between a bad advertisement and a good one. They just see a banner as a banner, and a pop-up as a pop-up. They don't care what the merchant is or if the website is the webmaster's only source of income, they just don't want to be bothered with the ads. If we show people how to block parasites using the host file be prepared to educate them on why they shouldn't block as many other ads as they can.

ABW needs to setup a drive thru web browser tuneup site for all web sufers. Free testing for Spyware/Adwarez programs with removal instructions and Ad-Aware type removal program downloads. Push a Popup killer like POW which selectively allows users to block ofending popups. Kazzaa Lite is a hacked program so just hack out the offending .HOSTs file and add-in one that allows clicks to the major affiliate networks. Then place a cleaned download link so our music thieving shoppers have a MP3 file sharing app. Then push downloads of Mailwasher or the 100% effective spamm eliminator

It's about time the technology wizzards team up to prevent the majority of spamm from reaching your in-box.

    http://www.cloudmark.com/company/pre...2002-11-18.php

LAS VEGAS. - Nov 18, 2002 - Today at COMDEX Fall 2002, Cloudmark, the company that stops spam before it costs you money, announced the availability of Cloudmark Authority. Unsolicited e-mail or spam is rapidly becoming the silent killer of a business's most precious resource - its employee's time. In addition, offensive spam can generate serious corporate liability and headaches for the human resources department and it is a constant drain on the enterprise's infrastructure. Already, spam comprises nearly one in three corporate messages exchanged this year, according to Radicati Group estimates. Authority cracks the genetic code of spam solving this problem for enterprises by integrating the most popular spam-fighting network - proven since 1998 with a predictive Bayesian engine. Authority's innovative approach of analyzing spamDNA to fight unsolicited email offers the most effective spam prevention with near-zero false positives and lowest total cost of ownership (TCO).

If we as a group don't make it easy for all web surfers to eliminate unwanted advertising they will take any solution which will often harm affiliates. Their professed hatred of gorrilla advertising, via any form of popup or pop-under or Flash half page floating banners & spamm, can be used to our advantage with a Drive-thru browser tune-up area.

Mike, that is exactly what I mean. We here at ABW should set up a list of networks to block and then create a host file which we can offer our customers. They do not need to edit or overwrite their common host file. They just have to copy it into their existing host file, and if they only have the hosts.sam they can rename it without the ending and it should work properly. I do not have any spyware or parasiteware on my PC. Is s.o. out there having some progams existing on his PC? Perhaps he can test it for a short time with just some entries in the file.
