Understanding 'broad match' vs. 'exact match'
So here's a dumb question but I have never seen this explained specifically....

    1. If I use a tool like the google keywords research tool, I can input some keywords like: 'dog training' and then see the search results. but how do I check the 'exact match'? just put the terms in quotes? The results would seem to be the same if the tool is to be believed?

    2. Also what do we really mean by an exact or a broad match? Is an exact match when a google searcher uses quotes and when a google user searches with only the precises terms you are researching?

In other words if a google user types in 'dog training' or ' "dog training ' I assume that is an exact match for 'dog training' but if a user types in 'dog training for poodles' that is a broad match for the same terms?

    Is that correct?

broad vs exact match descriptions from google help
Broad match will substitute similar words. You can narrow down the results from google's keyword tool by unselecting Broad Match to be returned in your results. Currently, its on the left midway down the page after you search and get your initial result set. Unchecking starts removing results.

Here is a link to google's descriptions of match types.

What are keyword matching options? - AdWords Help

    Broad match: keyword
Allows your ad to show on similar phrases and relevant variations
(The broad match modifier may also be used to further refine your broad keyword matches: +keyword.)

    Phrase match: "keyword"
Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase

    Exact match: [keyword]
Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase exclusively

    Negative match: -keyword
Ensures your ad doesn't show for any search that includes that term

Thanks for your explanation, but it is only with Google Adwords keyword tool, if you use SerpAnalytics then you would find different thing related to broad match and exact match.

Yes, different keword tools usually show different results. Actually, I don't think those data or numbers are exact, take them as a suggestion is ok, but if you paln to all rely on them, you'd better think again.
