Facebook Lawsuits Against Affiliate Marketing Scams (merged)
"The lawsuits accuse two men, Steven Richter of Kings Park, New York, and Jason Swan of Las Vegas, of attempting to trick Facebook users into visiting Internet marketing websites. A Canadian affiliate marketing company, MaxBounty, is named in a third lawsuit. All three were filed Tuesday in federal court in San Jose, California."

Why am I not surprised by any of those.

Interestingly, one of the alleged scams in the cases is one I did a write up on back in Feb on Revenews. Same scam, same parties involved.

I wish some folks would quite tarnishing the industry with this kind of stuff.

Unfortunately as long as the penalties are a percentage of profits there is no real deterrent. Fines are simply figured into the business plan as a cost of doing business. Serious jail time would go a long way toward putting an end to this crap.

That does always crack me up. I guess if you've been sued as many times as he has, that makes you an expert on legal risks. I think I sat in on the session once, and it was actually pretty informative. Some legal issues (like CAN-SPAM) impact good players, too.

The note from my blog post

Note: Media Breakaway has posted a press release on their web site claiming that the Steven Richter named in this lawsuit is not related to the Steven and Scott Richter of Media Breakaway.
Steven Richter of MediaBreakaway is saying it's a completely different Steven Richter named in the lawsuit. The court documents do say he's in NY, while the other Richters are in CO.

Although, I will say I've seen Affiliate.com links associated with these types of "offers" on Facebook in the past.

Interesting or ironic coincidence. And since MediaBreakaway posted on Press Release on their site clarifying it's NOT them, other people came to the same conclusion.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck. If it spams like a spammer it's probably Steven Richter(MediaBreakaway). Goes to show you how a bad reputation will follow you.

Wow, what are the odds that two people in the same industry would have the same name.

    Thanks for the clarification, Kellie!

The guys that were stuffing cookies in Ebay's program are being charged by the FBI, and IMO will be going to jail for a very long time.
