Singular Keywords vs. Phrases

I'm new to affiliate marketing and I have started researching as of early last week. I went through some online seminars, including some videos on youtube. I put some keywords into google adwords and I made the mistake of signing up a domain based on the hits of the "individual" keywords, not by a "phrase" meaning two or 3 words in the search box. I misunderstood one of the online "gurus" about popularity searches and hits.
So my question is should I still go ahead and work on this blog based on the singular keywords? They are 3 separate keywords stringed together to form the domain name. Each keyword had a popular search hit of over 500,000.
Looking forward to an answer.
