By John Oates
    Published Tuesday 7th September 2004 09:42 GMT

A Florida man is facing 33 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute a controlled substance.

Vineet Chhabra ran a series of websites offering Viagra, diet pills and other controlled drugs. Customers had to fill in online questionaires or complete a telephone interview but did not need to see a doctor or submit a prescription, as required under US law. His sister Sabina Faruqui also pleaded guilty and faces one-year probation. Five others, including a doctor and a pharmacist have already pleaded guilty. In total, 11 have been charged as a result of the three-year investigation.

Chhabra will be back in court for sentencing on 3 December. Prosecutors claim he has made $125m from running the sites - money he may have to forfeit or pay in fines. According to wire reports, he may also lose 15 luxury vehicles, including six Mercs, 72 pieces of jewelery, the contents of 60 bank accounts scattered around the world and property, including a $2m office building in Weston, Florida.

The online pharmacy began life in Ohio ,but moved to Virginia after regulators began to take an interest. Chhabra moved it again from Virginia to Florida to keep one step ahead of regulators. He said in court his business was responsible and he had no intention of harming patients

Note that the person listed ran a series of websites which always sounds fishy, and based out of Florida too.. the spamshine state. Personally I'd never touch pharma sites with a bargepole.

I've always been concerned about promoting meds online, so I've never done it. The no prescrip needed thing on controlled substances has always seemed a bit over the top.

The FDA doesn't like anyone putting even the slightest dent in their BILLIONS of dollars in profits!

Used to be able to bring back RX from Mexico, so long as it was only enough for your own personal use.

Last time I was down there I was detained for 30 minutes on my return for bringing back 1 bottle of 100 Amoxicillin, 50 prescription headache pills and one tube of Retin-A.

Don't mess with the FEDS. You might make a ton of money with your RX links, but you'll spend it all on legal fees. Not worth it!

Man, I actually know this company. I year ago I wasn't working for myself yet, and had 2 job interviews with them. They probably had about 20 employees back then and were hiring like 10 more.

I don't understand how an affiliate can be legally responsible for being an affiliate? The online pharmacy is the one who is doing all the dirty work, right?

I mean, is there any precedent for an affiliate being held accountable in this type of situation?

I've never promoted pharmaceuticals and have never been tempted to, the no-prescription part means that people can basically self-medicate. I've seen at first hand the devastating effects on family and on the individual concerned of what this can do.

I've always regarded online pharmacies as just a small step down from illegal drugs. What is prescribed to one person for good reasons can become life destroying when obtained by another without control.
