random links in each detail page
Is there anyway I can insert random links in each detail page to other detailed
    pages created by webmerge?

I use webmerge for my store and I want to include on each product detail page a
section that says "Other popular items" and have 3-4 links to other product
pages. I have about 15k products in my store so doing this manually would take
    me awhile

    Thanks,
    Greg

There isn't currently a way to get to a random record, but it may not be too difficult to add. I'm traveling now on holiday, but if you have a moment to propose what that syntax should look like I'd be happy to explore this further when I get back.

    Hi Richard,

the problem i see now is that webmerge cannot list multiple record sets within the same detail page it creates. so for instance if my detail page looked something like this.

    [WM-Field: title]
    [WM-Field: product_id]
    [WM-Field: Description maxlen=200]
    [WM-Field: price]

AND I WANT TO ADD SOMETHING LIKE THIS:

    Other popular products:
    [WM-Field: OPTIONALtitle1] - [WM-Field: OPTIONALDescription1 maxlen=40]
    [WM-Field: OPTIONALtitle2] - [WM-Field: OPTIONALDescription2 maxlen=40]
    [WM-Field: OPTIONALtitle3] - [WM-Field: OPTIONALDescription3 maxlen=40]
    [WM-Field: OPTIONALtitle4] - [WM-Field: OPTIONALDescription4 maxlen=40]

this can't be done easily and quickly with 15k products. so if webmerge could somehow pull records from a seperate spreadsheet on the detail pages it creates and display multiple records as shown above it would be awesome.

even if that seperate spreadsheet was a master list of all records and webmerge just simply went down the list 1,2,3,4,5/etc and inserted each corresponding record into the detail page that would be great.

It did indeed make good sense, gp. Sorry it took me so long to repond, but I had an excellent holiday season - hope you did too.

The tricky part in attempting to add this in v2.x is that the WM generation engine only understands a single record when making detail pages.

The best way to handle this in the current setup might be to consider using a WM-Include tag to pull in that multi-record section of the page, which would be generated in a previous run.

The only issue there would be finding a way to specify random records, since there's currently no random function. I could add one, and will look into doing this soon, but in the meantime if you have a convenient way to break out sections of the feed into chunks from your database that might get you though for now.
