Our Flock Just Got A Little Smaller :(
Our oldest budgie, Jasper, died yesterday. He was 8 years old. We think it was most likely old age/natural causes, as his biological sister (mentioned in this thread) died of natural causes at 6. We hope that's what the necropsy shows because we have 3 other budgies still that we want to keep healthy. The flock has been kind of subdued since his passing, so I think they're missing him too. He kind of had a decline similar to his sister, so we were sort of expecting it due to his age, but it's still kind of hard to take. Little bird, big personality, and even though he was a little skittish about being handled, he loved to sit on my shoulder and listen to me talk. We'll miss him a lot.

    Sorry to hear.

That is awesome though that he lived that long. I didn't know they could! My brother had some that never lasted so we always thought they can't live more than a couple of years.

Our first pair lived 6 and 8 years. Our oldest male is 7 years old now and we've got a 3 year old female and a 2 year old male. I've read that average lifespan is anywhere from 5-10 years, but they can live several years longer than that, depending on care and genetics.

The vet called with results of his exam. Jasper had a very large tumor on his kidney, which is unfortunately fairly common in parakeets. There's nothing we could have done for him even if we brought him in months ago, when he had no sign of illness. That is actually a bit of a relief, both for us and for the health of our remaining birds.
