I hate to even ask this, but running out of options. I haven't done alot of posting on here but I have done a lot of reading, and now I need some advice.
I have this person from a competing site (DotDeals.com) that insists on coming to my site which is a shopping forum type site and keeps creating user names and flaming my site with links to her site. I keep banning the users she creates, asking her to cease but she insists on this. I have blocked her ips but again she masks them. Now I know this is a competitive market, but geez, some tactics are beyond competition. Honestly, I don't know why this person is so obsessed with my site. Please, is there anything I can do?
    Anyone!!!!!!

Would it help to know that you're not alone? DotDeals has been doing the same to us and Connie at FlamingoWorld for a long time. There's even a post about it here on ABW a while back.

I have not figured out how to prevent them from doing this. I've banned probably over 20 names, banned their IP addresses and they just continue to sign up and post links to their site. Sometimes it's straight to DotDeals but lately it's been to other domains that redirect to DotDeals.

Anyway, you're not being singled out. They do it to others, too.

    Hi Madness,

My advice would be to get in contact with the affiliate manager you have the best relationship with and let them know what's going on and with whom. They can then push the matter more directly with their respective network contact.

This is a horrible thing to have happen. I know about it because I had one of my affiliates bring it to my attention with a similar case. First I sent the offender a note to stop what they were doing or I would remove them...They did not stop so I removed them and cc'd my correspondence to the network. The network took action as well. The key is to get this out into the daylight on the merchant's and network side.

Speaking for most merchants, we won't tolerate this - but you have to let us know and give us a chance to verify the situation.

    Thanks Linda,
It does make me feel better know I am not the only one being attacked by this person, sorry it is happening to others as well. I only wish there was a simpler solution, until then I will keep banning and thanks for the reply.

    Easy Peasy

Haiko gets credit for this one. This is something that's been used on ABW for those "oh so special" URLs.

Go into the Admin Panel of your forum and make the competing site URL into a censored swear word.

Every time she tries to post it, it'll just show up as *****'s (or whatever you have the auto-censor turn it into).

It'll also turn the URL itself into *****s (or whatever you choose), and of course, a link to www.*****.com is a link to nowhere.

Also censor any variants you can dream up.

Edit: Just saw this. Maybe *not* so easy after all...

quote:
Sometimes it's straight to DotDeals but lately it's been to other domains that redirect to DotDeals.

That can make it a bit harder, but I'd say to just censor those too, as they are discovered. It being a mega-spammer with multiple domains will probably make this an ongoing process for quite some time, though.

If your forum software allows it, maybe you could make it so that links will only go live for people with X amount of posts...

Contact the host of their web site via certified letter. The host can be held liable for illegal activity. They are likely to shut them down all together.

This is not true, the host has no responsibility here. For all they know someone is forging information and trying to burn dotdeals.com

Hosts are not judges, they are not the police. Past DMCA violations which have a very set course of action for a host, for activity like this, there is very little a host can or should do.

Have you tried contacting the aff mngr of merchants of products sold? There is an anti-spam policy of every aff agreement and this is spam - get merchants to issue warnings and/or end relationships with this party and this odious practice may end in a hurry.

Much Thanks to every one and your sound advice. I wasn't sure about the host issue but I see now why that wouldn't work.
You have all given me excellent ideas and I don't feel so alone, as I did before. I didn't want to go to extremes of dragging aff mngr's in on this, but I must say the time I am spending just deleting and trying to ward her/him off is consuming and I may not have any other choice, but to do so.

I do that every time. So far this past year, they've posted 8 different domain names. All have been put into the censored list so that ***** shows on the posts. Next time they visit, they post a new one. And since their user name gets banned, they sign up again - 11 this past year and they all have different IP addresses.

They're trying to get even sneakier lately. Just this past week they posted "Donate now to help Victims of Tragedies ! check out : American Red Cross" which went to a new domain, which redirected to DotDeals.

scohaz - There is no illegal activity that they're doing. They're not spamming my users, they're just breaking my forum rules.

My next step is to start notifying merchants. Banning and censoring doesn't work with these people.

They keep spamming my site too.

I've been word-blocking their names all along, but every couple of months they come up with a new one.

BTW these domains all redirect to dotdeals.

    buy-properties.com
    buycabs.com
    cabsrus.com
    getgrocery.com

I'm predicting that one of these will win the next titanium award from LS. Anyone want to start a pool!

Earlier this year I had a few spammers come to my site and I got tired of it, I got tired of censoring domain names and banning IP. So I contacted my lawyer and asked him a few questions and he said that I could do what I wanted. (It's nice having a cousin whos a lawyer)

So since my cousin said it was ok and since you need to register on my site and agree to the TOS of my site. I added the following to the agreement.

"Posting Advertisements on our forum will result in a $50 USD dollar fee for each post made billed to the site/sites being advertised"

After that a few hosting companies posted and I litterally sent bills with a Copy of the Terms of Agreement with that portion highlighted and a print out of their post. First few were ignored but then some checks started coming in that actually cleared.

I didn't get paid all of the time but I did make some money. But sadly since June no one has spammed me :'( I guess word got around. Since Traffic Posting etc are up. Just spamming is down

    Its worth a shot.

The American Red Cross doesn't take kindly to people using their name to redirect to other sites, you might want to point them to the posts and see if *they* want to take action!
