WSJ - Feb 24 - Google Penalizes Overstock for Search Tactics .
"Google Inc. is penalizing Overstock.com Inc. in its search results after the retailer ran afoul of Google policies that prohibit companies from artificially boosting their ranking in the Internet giant's search engine."

Google Penalizes Overstock for Search Tactics - WSJ.com

"The Overstock incident is the second move by Google in two weeks against a large retailer for allegedly violating guidelines. Earlier this month, the New York Times reported that Google lowered the ranking of links to J.C. Penney Co. in response to tactics employed by an SEO consultant on its behalf. "

That, indeed, is interesting news. Thanks for posting it, Zeus.

It is also a good thing. it would be good to see the Big G refine it's algos to stop all the "gaming" of the system that is going on.

I can't find anything about this at Webmaster World. It's going to shake a few biggies.

I think it was this forum post on WMW that started the investigation.

Merchants, any data you provide to Google Shopping should also be in your affiliate network datafeed. More data means more sales!

Yep! I remember the beginning of the discussion. I was not thinking it will go that far.

Google's guidelines ask websites not to participate in "schemes" that are "intended to manipulate PageRank,"
Doesn't seem to be working very well. Perhaps they should ask nicer.

Just call it "Big Stick Diplomacy." From the old proverb, "Speak softly and carry a big stick, and you will go far..." (or something like that). Goog certainly has the big stick.

Funny, I have been a (paid) subscriber to WWW for over five years and seldom seem to pick up on those tidbits - until after the fact - and someone else point them out. Go figure. I suppose I should "hang out" there more often.

Wow, I was reading that WMW thread earlier this week.

Some members appeared to know what the link-building scheme was (edu sites) but until I read the WSJ article, it wasn't clear to me.

I wonder if this will change Overstock's view of affiliates..?

I think overstock manipulated their back links from edu sites. According to google there is big trust with edu links. And it is now monitored for frauds and the story came up in the news.

I would hope google is smart enough not to give more trust to a link just because it is from an .edu domain!

Every student gets their own .edu page.
I've seen plenty of student pages loaded with spam links over the years.
Also plenty of .edu links openly for sale...
