It makes all the abstract news reports very, very real.

I think I'd rather have missed this than subject myself to that crap.

    Very interesting read.

I think that we should send Elena postcards from where we live, just as a show of appreciation for her web site...

I guess that that is her address on the http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/ki...chapter27.html page:

Amazing. It's almost impossible to imagine how all those people felt, having to leave everything behind forever. I think it would have been better to have been gone and told you can't return, rather than to take a final look and know you won't be back.

    Thanks for posting the link!

At the time of that disaster I was travelling in Europe. I was sipping espresso in the coffee bar of a hostel in Amsterdam when they turned on the radio. A newscaster was talking about the radiocative cloud spreading across Austria and Sweden.

For one awful moment I thought WW3 had started.

It's difficult to imagine a worse catastophe. Natural disasters can be devastating but once they're done they're done.

There is a high instance of mutation, leukemia and cancer in children born in regions around Chernobyl since the accident.

Christ, let's hope nothing like that ever happens again.

Wow, I just can't imagine having to leave everything behind like that, especially the photos. The pictures of the ghosttown were especially powerful.

"and then in April 26, in year 1986 a guy named Akimov pushed wrong button and launched the biggest nuclear catastrophe ..."

Thinking about all that catastrophe that was caused by accident by just one man, may me think about what can happen to this planet if one day one dictator anywhere decides to use a nuclear weapon against another country.

The sobering thing about Chernobyl is it was just a mistake by one guy in the course of his everyday work, and the safety checks in place were not sufficient to avert the catastrophe.

Right now there is a creaky, unstable nuclear reactor in the Czech Republic, right up against the Austrian border.

    The Austrians are VERY nervous.

If the Czechs decommission it they will be hard pushed to supply their country with affordable electricity.

What does hard-pushed mean? They simply won't be able to generate enough electricity for their needs. Without massive subsidy from abroad.

While looking over my ABW e-mail digest, I saw this thread. I revisited the site and found that the author has taken up another subject. Something called the serpants wall.

    Anyway, read on.
