    8.9 Earthquake Hits Japan
A major earthquake has hit (off coast of) Japan, severe damage from quake and tsunami. Hawaii's low-lying areas are under evacuation. Pretty much the entire Pacific region is under tsunami alert at the moment.

Estimated 4 million+ buildings in/around Tokyo without power. 7th largest recorded quake in Japan.

    5 deaths reported so far.

That's the kind of pictures you don't want to see in you live in California. I can't go to bed after watching that.

    Man that captcha is annoying.

Anyway, that should've read 7th largest recorded, largest in Japan. Teaches me for typing too fast while watching 2 TVs and 10+ websites...plus about 5 quick edits.

Wish they'd update on Hawaii & West coast.

You shouldn't be getting a captcha. Send Michael a PM about it and he'll take care of it for you.

CAPTCHA should be fixed for you.

I read this morning that the surge in Hawaii was 3 feet, so it sounds like it'll be very minor on the west coast.

    3 feet in Kauai
    6 to 7 in Maui
7 to 8 on the Big Island [Hilo Side] with water inland 200 feet & dead fish in parking lots.

So Cal should see minor waves.

We live inland at about 1150 feet.

This morning's update: This was the largest ever recorded earthquake in Japan and the 5th strongest in the world since 1900.

Number of deaths now reported is over 300, expected to exceed 1,000.

Monterey Bay in central CA has been hit by significant waves, causing damage.

(I heard last night that a tsunami can travel at 500 MPH.)

Later reports correct this: Four people swept out to sea in Crescent City Harbor were rescued in southern Oregon - all are alive!

    That is just amazing..incredible!
I am hoping that the lesser Pacific islands make it through this without total devastation. So many people are likely to be affected.

Little side note: Please let me know if this isn't fixed. I went through and fixed the configuration on about 200 member accounts, out of about 2000 that are potentially affected.

BBC News said yesterday that 4 of 5 nuclear reactors at the power plant in the area affected had to be shut down because there was no way to cool them. One of those buildings suffered an explosion today and is emitting radioactive steam. They are concerned about the possibility of a meltdown. On top of everything else.

redcross.org is handling donations for food, water and bedding for survivors. What a mess.

    Japan now
I feel very sorry to Japan, I pity them. I hope they could get back and stand up very soon. Hope that there would be more kind people to support them.
