    Stupid Merchant?
Is it just me or is this an odd business decision?

    March 24, 2011

    Open Letter to All Affiliates

    Dear Jon ,

I would like to notify all our affiliates that our store is entering a period of higher demand for our products during the warmer weather and therefore greater conversion rates for sales. As is our policy, we have lowered our commission to 5% for this season. We will return to the higher 8% commission in the fall. Thank you for your efforts in generating traffic to our site and we wish you continued success.

    Sincerely,

So common anymore. Merchant's lower their prices, offer larger discount coupons during their products' peak seasons in order to be more competitive in their marketplace.

Was it a big decrease? 3+ points?

If you have the sales to support it, consider contacting that merchant and requesting a Personalized Commission Rate.

    I'd call 8 to 5% a big decrease.

No, I have no sales. I had forgotten that I had applied with them. It's been more than a year and a half. I just thought the message was unusual. At least I'll give them points for honesty.

It's certainly not an affiliate-friendly policy, and likely does quite a bit of harm to their program. I would certainly consider it a stupid policy.

So would I, especially when you take into consideration they are probably promoting their products for less so the overall commission amount for that sale is significantly less.

I'll send him my resignation for free. I signed up last fall to replace some CSN products and they are right, it has been slow since I added them in, but they wasted several months of my time when I could have been promoting a good merchant. Now to start the hunt again. Losers.

Maybe they should word it that they increase commissions during the off season to promote more sales and bring them back down to normal rates in season?

I wondered the same thing when I saw it. (For those who didn't catch it, Greg manages Stupid.com, so he has a lot of "stupid" posts about a "stupid" company with "stupid" products. )

Having been on both sides of this equation, I think this is another great reminder of how critical it is to establish some baselines at your programs inception. Margins change, seasons change, suppliers change... Initially establish a commission level that you should be able to live with long term (i.e. just next to forever), and make POSITIVE adjustments for individual affiliates as it becomes worthwhile to do so.

Plan your program from the beginning. It will save a lot of hard feelings and threads like this in the long run.

I emailed this same merchant about it and never got a reply either.

If sales are doing so well in their peak season, why not spread the wealth and reward those that drive the sales? Selling more = more money = more commission = WIN WIN.

Maybe they should keep it 6.5 year round to avoid this mess.

OK -- so we know this merchant isn't "Stupid" -- but am I the only one interested in this thread that doesn't know who the merchant is? Can someone tell me??
