Received this e-mail this morning. Is today April fools day?

Due to certain changes within our company The Frog and the Princess has chosen to discontinue our affiliate programs effective April 1st, 2011. If and when we decide to reopen an affiliate program we will notify any of our currently active affiliates.

We'd like to thank our everyone for their continued support over these past years, and we wish you the best of luck.

My other favorite merchant in this niche is offline more than they are on.

This will essentially make 2 of my sites useless until I can find replacements.

A lot of small businesses are finding cost increases they didn't plan on and trying to deal with it, they might view affiliates as an expendable expense.

Is this for real or is someone playing around? My second e-mail was this.
Checking on SAS, the merchant seems to be alive.

Last Commissionable Transaction through Affiliate: 03/31/2011 06:57:40 PM

This is an automated notification regarding a commission change for the The Frog and The Princess ShareASale Affiliate Program.

This merchant has made a change to their default commission rate.

    Previous Per Sale Commission: 10.00%
    New Per Sale Commission: 0.00%

If you have any questions regarding this change, you should contact the merchant via your ShareASale account.

I would definitely be in the SAS Trouble Ticket window with that. Looks like they jumped the gun.

I sure hope this isn't someone's twisted idea of an April Fool's prank.

So they've announced that they're ending their affiliate program, but instead of actually doing so they've reset the commission rate to zero.

The skeptic's view is that they're seeking to take advantage of publishers by continuing to get advertising exposure without paying.

Another view (supported by some recent discussion threads on ABW) is that they're helping publishers (especially smaller publishers who can't immediately modify their sites) by not abruptly disabling existing links. It's also possible that they're hopeful that they'll reverse the decision "relatively soon."

(Arguably, resetting the commission rate to zero is more likely to inspire angry publishers to delete these links, than just terminating the program completely.)

Perhaps it's just the cynic in me, but any merchant that closes their program on the day of their announcement is not looking our for affiliates. SaS should close them immediately.

Something is not right. The program is alive on SAS.

I have sent e-mail to SAS and to the merchant.

Is it possible that someone is playing a sick joke?

It's not the first time a merchant is doing this at SAS. We have several threads about the same problem.
As long as they have money in their escrow account, they should not switch to $0 commission because it's in fact voiding all the sales and cookies life.
And on top of that their program will stay open (misleading new affiliates) because they are not spending the money in their account.

I have seen this before - I believe the merchant has to give x amount of time before closing and didn't do so.

They announce they are closing, but can't, therefore they set the commission level to 0%.

[edit: But then I could be mistaken...]

Just received this from the merchant.

Hello, yes it is true. We have some internal changes with the program that are necessary and mandatory that we have to address. Thank you.
They have been a viable merchant for 3 years on SAS

I think that "x amount of time" is the Tracking Gap set by the merchant

I am sorry if the merchant is having unforseen problems.
But this really makes for a pissy day on my part. Am I the only affiliate that they had?? Is no one else affected?

I can tell you that SAS should NOT allow this kind of "Closing" without taking the merchant offline.

Affiliates who use Shareasale's RSS feed and API to shut off a merchant can easily continue to send traffic to that merchant.

    This is theft, outright...

So weird. I just sent them an email a couple of days ago asking about an updated datafeed and they said they'd have one to me soon. Wonder if I triggered someone to actually pay attention.

Boo on the 0%, but I'd rather have it set to that until I can get links changed over than to have all those links going to "doesn't exist" pages. Still, ugh.

Tracking gap set by the merchant?
That is the term SAS uses for cookie duration in the Merchant Settings.

Generally SAS won't refund any money on account from a closed merchant until their cookie duration expires after they give notice - this allows affiliates who have driven clicks to collect on sales they make during the cookie window.

Ah, the two responses combined make perfect sense to me, now.
