I am curious. How do you answer this question?

I am asked this often and I have gotten to the point where I tell people that I promote products on the Internet. Then they say...."You mean like Ebay" and I just say yes.

If we actually explain it to people it ends up being a 45 minute conversation that most people still don't understand.

I am not the only one experiencing this and would like to hear solutions that others have come up with.

Internet marketing would be the easiest for them to understand, well maybe not. You market merchants and/or their products/deals etc. online and get paid commissions for it.

When visitors to my web site express confusion about my role in the sales process (manufacturer? retailer? do you have a store? catalog?) I explain that I'm a sales representative for retailers that have web sites and they pay me a commission if my sites generate sales for them.

So I guess I'm a Sales Representative. On my income taxes it just says "Webmaster."

I've had some trouble with this one myself. When I say I run a few websites I can avoid a bunch of questions. I find myself going into depth quite a bit anyway though.

I tell people I am an internet free agent. Sometimes store xyz needs me and I go to work for them as a part time. When they stop performing I become a free agent again do I get some confusing looks.
The best is when you try to explain to your accountant what you do. 2 years now and the guy is still wondering if I am collecting sales tax. If this happens to you change accountants...

My father asked me once where these cheques were coming from. He's in his 70's and never used a pc in his life. I said if I send someone from my site to another site and they buy something there I get credited with the sale and get 10%. He understood that instantly, no need for further explanation.

I heard this one once and I find it works when you get tired of the asking.
Freelance Internet Design, Technology and Ecommerce Specialist.
I was getting annoyed at the questions and threw that out ... I got a couple of ooohs and wow how much training and schooling did you need to get into that. I said it's an ongoing process.
They thought I meant continuing certification, I meant training myself to get up at a reasonable time and do some work and taking my daughter to and from school every day.

On forms I say "webmaster." It is an accurate description of what I do (run a website) although it doesn't explain how I get paid for it. But "gardener" doesn't explain exactly how and why a person gets paid for gardening (which could be a hobby), either.

In person I say, "I run a website." For some reason, no one ever seems curious to find out more.

Since closing my "real life" store and taking the business online, people ask me if I'm still not working. I used to take the time to explain but now I just say, yep, I'm still not working.

Like others have said, on forms and such I put Webmaster and when asked in person I say I have an online photography gallery and do internet marketing. Some want more explanation, but that satisfies most people

Yep, I just say I'm a webmaster most of the time also. That satisfies most people. What kills me is since I travel with my satellite dish (which is much bigger and more noticeable than a TV dish) I get people banging on my door wanting to know what the hell it's for or how many channels I get on it? That ultimately leads into what I do. Can't escape it. I look on the bright side though...It gives me a chance to hand out some business cards

As for forms, I put my business category as Advertising Agency for the self-employment tax, and on other forms I either use that or Webmaster. Personally I prefer Advertising since my sites are there as a vehicle for putting ads on, making the advertising the primary function and the webmaster part more of a by-product.

Face-to-face, I tell people I do Internet Marketing. Some ask more questions, but the marketing part keeps most of them from showing too much curiosity (they are afraid I'll give 'em a pitch).

If they ask more anyway, I've found that saying, "I sell all kinds of things..."--in that tone of voice that salespeople use when they want the prospect to mention a particular item, so they can zero in and do the hard sell--scares the rest of the curious ones away.

I opt for the term "Internet Marketing Consultant." Unfortunately, that gets some strange looks sometimes. Some of the "special" people with fancy titles and MBA's ask me why don't I go and get a real job. I laugh, head out for a round of golf on a Tuesday morning and call them from the course at their important job.

What really gets them is when they find out that we just broke ground on our new house and my wife is going to cut down to part time at her job in a few months.

Yep, all I do is sit next to the phone waiting for friends and family to call for my help with their problems. Afterall, everyone else is at work.

People have asked me what I do when I'm on vacation, sitting on the beach sipping a margarita. I tell them I'm working right now.

I usually tell people that I'm involved with internet marketing. When they say "Like selling things on eBay?" I generally say yes, because I do that a lot of that too. It saves me from having to give them a lengthy explanation of affiliate marketing that they probably won't understand, no matter how carefully I try to explain it

At first, I said internet marketing which led to so many questions from people on how to go about doing it.

Then I tried ecommerce which led to even more questions as people seem to imagine big $$ like google or something.

Finally, the best answer is stay at home mom. People just assume I'm a housewife. No further questions asked.

It is accurate as I stay at home (I work from home) and I'm a mom.
