    Amazon Tax Issue on TV
News reporter Ana Garcia of KNBC channel 4 in the Los Angeles area tweeted that she is doing a story on the pending Amazon tax bill, to be aired tonight on the channel 4 11:00 pm news.

I replied to her tweet linking information explaining the issue from the affiliate standpoint, with the hopes that she will include this in her report.

She re-tweeted my reply, so hopefully she read the information and will present a complete, fair report.

Found a link to her story.

Wow, mis-information on what an affiliate is:

"The bill, AB 153 (PDF), would go after Amazon by going after its affiliate businesses. Those are the California-based shops that sell on Amazon, and deliver their goods tax-free in the state. Amazon has vowed to fire all those California affiliates if the state attempts to tax Amazon."

She apparently thinks that affiliates are the storefront sellers on amazon.

I am not getting a good feeling about that after reading her story.

Guess I missed that statement when I skimmed the article earlier. But I have had a twitter back and forth with her, and while I thought she understood affiliate marketing afterwords, I did just tweet again that "California-based shops that sell on Amazon" are not affiliates and what affiliates actually are.

That was written before I sent her several links to the real info and she did respond indicating that she had not previously gotten the whole story.

Just had a new message from Ana Garcia, misstating the issue again. I sent a new series of tweets explaining it again. now I'm worried - I did think she understood it before.

Garcia's report was just on and she never mentioned the word "Affiliate" - totally ignored the salient part of the whole issue. Very disappointing. Left the impression that Amazon is stealing from the state and from local merchants; no mention of the tax requiring a "nexus" or of the impact on 25,000 California affiliates.
