    Auto-Approve vs. Manual
I couldn't find the proper spot to place this question... if a thread on the topic already exists please let me know. ( I searched, but could not find this specific topic)

Essentially I want to know what thoughts are on manually approving affiliates vs. setting everything to auto approve.

Right now my program is set to a limited auto-approve. I go through applications daily, to get familiarized with new apps and to make sure that nothing stands out. If something does stand out, I always reach out to the affiliate.

Specifically I want to know if there are any better or worse implications when it comes to the AM/affiliate relationships, when the program is set to one vs the other.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm not an AM, just an up-and-coming affiliate. And I've realized more and more merchants are going manual.

I think it's the age-old quantity vs quality.

For us it depends on the network. With ShareASale we auto-approve. Mainly because they manually review new affiliate accounts so not just anyone can get in. Some do slip through the cracks though and not every legit affiliate is a good fit for you. We get the email each time an affiliate joins so we can take a quick look at their site.

With CJ we manually approve since it seems there's nobody watching the front door. If they can fill out the form they get into the network.

Just remember approved affiliates represent your company.

I've seen more and more low quality affiliates coming though the networks lately. We manually approve affiliates in every program and generally only approve the ones we've worked with in other programs or we recruited.

We give affiliates a second shot to respond when they are declined but 99% never do.

Shareasale we auto approve then screen the application emails (very well written).
AvantLink we auto approve as I personally know them and their standards.
    LinkShare always manually approved.
    Google always manually approved.
Commission Junction all network ranked New or 0 are auto declined the rest manually approved.

For all networks we re-screen all declined monthly looking for rising stars.

Manual approve everything, there is no reason to have an affiliate program on auto approve. There are just too many bad players out there.

I wrote a blog post on this the other day and placed it on my site.

Looks like I will be manually approving all applicants on CJ for now. Have to try to clean up the field a little bit!

Thanks for all of the replies!

We have build our own affiliate platform, much like amazon.com, and we have a combination. If affiliates subscribe to our program they have immediately acces. They are able to take promotion tools (e.g. banners, productfeed, etc). But we clearly state on the homepage that they are still under review.

Than manually we check each website. We check two things:
    - What type of affiliate are they (we check how did they subscribed)
    - What types of products are relevant to their website (we use this information to send campaign information that is relevant --> so, somebody who is promoting books, will not receive campaign information on electronics)

There are two important advantages to this way:
    - First, the affiliate can get working with the program when he subscribes or as we in Dutch would say, strike while the iron is hot ;-)
    - Secondly, we have total insight what type of affiliates are subscribing and which productgroups are most popular --> and which productgroups we have to recruit

Our CJ program has been running fully on manual since late last week and I must say that having no option but having to go through each and every single application, gives me a muuuccchh better idea of the sites and affiliates that I am dealing with. Also I find it easier to sort the applications right off the bat.
