Getting the ad impressions, but not the clicks
We have been doing affiliate marketing for about 6 months now. We seem to be getting great ad impressions across many different ads, but we just aren't getting the clicks. Based on any of your experiences, what might be keeping us from getting a better conversion on impressions vs. clicks? Is it just crappy ads, not enough affiliates are posting ads, etc.? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

What do you mean by ads? Where are these ads?

I would not worry too much about impressions, they are always wildly above clicks. The numbers to watch are conversions to clicks. If shoppers click through and do not convert, then the store, navigation, check-out process etc. may need some adjustments.

Many ad impressions are not people, but bots - or even affiliates setting things up. I always see a big impressions increase in stats while I am just tweaking design. I would also give things more time as 6 months is about how long it can take to build a new page or site, get it indexed and move up through the serps to where it becomes productive. No matter what the ebooks say, it doesn't happen overnight. In the case of PPC you will see few impressions compared to clicks, the points mentioned here are for content sites.

pugsgear is an AvantLink Merchant so I would think this is about network stats and ads/banners on affiliate sites.

Agreed! I think that moving this thread out of the Affiliate Academy's "Driving Traffic" forum might help, so I'm moving it to the Affiliate Manager's FAQ forum, it is a frequently asked question there.

Just in case you're still looking for answers on this: it's key to know what to expect from internet banner ads. If you're even getting 1 click for every 100 impressions, you're doing quite well even though that doesn't look like a lot. But if you're getting fewer than 1 click for every 200 impressions (a .50% CTR or lower) than you probably do want to think about reworking your banner. Just keep experimenting with images and copy until you get the improvement you're hoping for.
